Cumulus Support

I was curious what software folks are using for accessing their Raspberry Pi over the Internet. The two I see mentioned are Weaved and Dataplicity. I tried Dataplicity for no particular reason and I wasn't crazy about it. It didn't like it when I tried to copy and paste commands into the terminal window. I think it uses Adobe Flash. Is Weaved similar? It appears another option is port forwarding.

Mtputty, or just putty, no point in running a GUI on the pi as I just use it to run Cumulus and a web server.

I have needed this access as I have a pi in a house a few hundred kilometres from where I live and only have 4G internet access. With this type of internet my provider does not provide a public ip address so the port forwarding approach doesn't work (connection sits behind NAT). I have been using weaved and, after your post, installed dataplicity to compare. I like weaved as it gives me the ability to use remote desktop and get access to the full pi gui where I can access the MX gui and change settings that I couldn't change with the terminal interface (or perhaps you can but beyond my knowledge). From my very brief look at dataplicity, it only gives me a terminal interface (correct?). The downside of weaved is that you get a new connection string and port each time you access which is a bit painful updating the remote desktop login each time but not a huge problem if you're only accessing periodically (as I am).
So I think my vote would be for port forwarding if you can do it but Weaved next and then dataplicity.

On a Pi with a GUI I've used VNC, and for those without, I use putty. Only on the local network rather than over the internet.

Just to be clear my question was concerning access over the Internet and not inside the same local network. I use FireSSH for that and it works fine. There other other good solutions like PuTTY also.

To answer Steve's earlier question I believe Dataplicity on supports a terminal session on the RP. It does connect easily. I assume that the RP keeps a tunnel open to the Dataplicity server so when I am away from home it knows the IP for my modem and can connect.

I have a sophos utm box on the edge of my gateway so this handles a sophos ssl vpn client to allow access to my whole inside lan. works really well

I have OpenVPN installed on my router (running Open WRT), you could run it on your rPi instead. Gives access to all my home machines, and means I can RDP into laptops when I'm away to provide the 'free' tech support that is expected by the family!

hi, want to share also my remote connection experience.
Since VPN access from my company to my home network will probably be observed, I have only 1 TCP Port open which is SSH to my BananaPi at home. Everything else will be tunneled through this simple SSH connection including Webbrowser Access / RDP to my windows box and other connections to different computers in my home network. This seem to be the most save, fast and secure (SSL) way to remotely access homenetwork
No OpenVPN, no other remote tool which is using different ports. Interested? try searching google for "SSH port tunneling with putty"
and as a remote tool, I am using SuperPutty which is based on putty and need putty installed, but allows many connecitons to different servers but having a GUI with TABs
