CumulusMX interface not loading on RP3 using localhost:8998

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

CumulusMX interface not loading on RP3 using localhost:8998

Post by VTHokie74 »

CumulusMX is running and updating everything on the web page and WU normally but I can't seem to bring up the the CumulusMX web interface on my Raspberry Pi using either localhost or the IP address. I can bring it up on another computer using the IP address:8998. When I open CumulusMX on the browser on the RP3 it comes up with a file index page. The only thing I know that I did on the RP3 was delete some download folders. CumulusMX is running as user root.

It could be your browser, some of the browsers on the Pi are very basic - which one are you using? I found that Epiphany worked OK with MX.

I am using Epiphany. It worked when I first installed CumulusMX. I will take a screen shot of what I am getting and post it later.

Here is a screen shot of the page that comes up on localhost:8998 -
I notice it redirects to /home/pi/downloads(#) There are multiple downloads folders in /home/pi/ Those were the ones I deleted because I didn't think I need them.

It's odd that it's going to a file:// URL. What exactly are you typing into the browser address bar? You're not just clicking on the html file in a directory listing, are you? What happens if you explicitly type the full URL into the browser - http://localhost:8998/index.html

I am typing either http://localhost:8998 or http://192.168.1.53:8998. Both redirect like that. The "downloads(#)" are html documents in /home/pi and not folders. It seems to add them when I try to open the CumulusMX browser window.

Sorry, I have no idea. I do recall that someone else had exactly the same problem, but I don't know how they resolved it, or indeed whether they did at all.

This is weird. I tried opening the IP address for the wireless adapter, http://192.168.52:8998 for my RP3, in Epiphany and it comes up with the CumulusMX web interfcace. Both the Ethernet IP and localhost redirect to the other page I linked above. At least I know how to get to CumulusMX now. The Ethernet address works fine from another PC with either IP address.

Edit: When I go back to an address that worked like 127.0.0.1:8998 now it doesn't work. It acts like a download. I am completely baffled. I can ping localhost and both IP addresses from the command line on the RP3. I keeps adding downloads(#).html pages in the home/pi directory.

One more piece of information..
I found that if I delete the temporary internet files CumulusMX works once or twice then it goes back to creating the downloads(#).html files and going to the worng page.

I tried switching the interface from web sockets to ajax today as mentioned in the FAQ but it didn't solve the problem. Clearing temporary internet files works and then the interface will open once or twice tops.

Edit: I think switching to ajax helped. I am getting mostly mostly good page loads on the interface now.

Switching to Ajax is only a possible solution if the page loads OK but no data is displayed, which isn't what you're seeing. If this a bug in MX then I have no idea what it's doing wrong. I think it's more likely the browser and/or the environment, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

I'd have to say that switching to Ajax really didn't really help. I cleared history and temporary Internet files. The interface will open a couple of times then on about the third time it switches to the download mode. I end up with a string of downloads.html files in the pi directory. I tried changing the owner of all the files in the CumulusMX directory and subs to root. That didn't seem to help but that was before I switched to Ajax. I switched them back to pi for now.

I am out of ideas. As far as I know my Rasbian setup is normal.

I moved MX from a windows 10 machine to a RPI 3 (Jessie) a few days ago and had exactly the same problem accessing the web interface. My solution has been a workaround - it works fine with the chromium browser. While this has the added benefit of displaying all my bookmarks, it is a bit slow to startup.

I don't have a Pi with a GUI running at the moment (my Pi2 was killed by a thunderstorm) so I can't try this myself at the moment. To be honest, I didn't really expect anyone to be using the Cumulus UI on the Pi itself anyway - the Pi is a great little device, but it's not really a desktop replacement.

Well if the truth be known neither do I use the pi's web browser but in getting MX set up on the Pi I had tried it - and quickly found its limitations. In fact I'm not really sure now why I even bothered with the Pi - except as a cheap way of doing a lttle experiment with a Linux OS!
