raspberry pi 3
Hey Cumulus MX users,
I've had a raspberry pi 3, running Jessie the latest build and I've just been installing LAMP and running sudo apt-get update also a few other commands I did have the stop start script running however I thought that the problem may be because of this script which I'm keen to get running again as the aspect of local and internet backups were awesome, now I'm certain it's not the script. For the last 2 weeks I've just been running bare-bones, no scripts just the basic Cumulus MX.
The main problems I'm getting is every 3 weeks or so, I login to Cumulus MX from local browser only for it to fail. I go out and plug a TV into the raspberry and the GUI doesn't show up and I have to re-build. It's getting really annoying. How do you guys manage a linux installation? Should I try another SD card? Could it be that which is creating catastrophic failures? Now thinking about it, it could be the SD card, it was fairly cheap however it was a speed 3 if that makes sense to anybody. I may have to try another SD card actually.
I'm frustrated as nothing has really changed on the raspberry it just fails for no reason, could it be updates on the raspberry also like auto updates?
1. What is a stable platform to run Cumulus MX from the new raspberry.
2 . A good SD card, recommendation please!
Thanks guys any help is appreciated
Matt

Re: raspberry pi 3
I am guessing that you are referring to a CLASS 3 SD card and not a Speed 3 card. I would not run anything lower than a Class 10 card in any of the newer Pi's.endfm wrote:Hey Cumulus MX users,

Re: raspberry pi 3
woops just looked it's a Lexar 16gb, Micro SD, Class 10 - I thought it was a class 3. Apologies, hmm would it be better running jessie raspbian without the gui? Maybe that's why it's stuffing up.
I reset it this morning and all it was doing was an fdisk over and over and over!
cheers,
Matt

Re: raspberry pi 3
Boot of the SD card and then run the main operating system on a an SSD/hard disk or USB stick. I use Raspberry boot to do that and I have now had Kodi running on a Pi 2 without fault for over a year, whereas a SD card was always failing. Also make sure you are using a good enough power supply as a lot of supposedly "Pi power supplies" are not rated high enough if you are plugging a few USB devices in.

Re: raspberry pi 3
In the passt years I used so many pi1 and pi2 with really cheap sd cards.
Class 10 and 4-8 gb and i never had a defect card so far.
Often i do not shut down them, but simply plug them off.
I am using a pi2 with kodi plugged in in the USB Port of the tv.
When i turn off the TV, the power for the Pi is also off, without shutdown.
Never had problems like this. And i am Talking about at least 10 different Pi s in the past 2 years. Not very helpful my post......i Know

Re: raspberry pi 3
You really shouldn't have a problem with the SD card - unless it is already damaged in some way.
I have two pi devices running CunulusMX - both in a headless configuration - accessing two different weather stations. I access/'manage' them from a PC using WinSCP. I also run Kodi on a separate Pi (type A) with a class 10 micro SD card (4 Gb) and access the music / videos from one of my NAS servers. I boot all Pi systems from SD card but run the OS from either SSD (on a Banana Pi) or USB attached hard disk.
As previously mentioned a good quality 5V 2A power supply is essential. A lot of phone adapters simply won't hack it. Even the Apple iPhone adapters seems to struggle with some hardware configurations.

Raspbian should be your choice. It s a debian jessi. Of course without a gui. Nobody needs it on a weather station Computer.
A Class 10 Micro SD Card should do it. Sony and toshiba are having good quality.
I am mostly using Sandisk Cards which are also good quality and cheaper.

Re: raspberry pi 3
This is where I will be going tonight, that's my problem the SD card just fails with all kinds of errors, which I totally don't have the time to look into.water01 wrote:Boot of the SD card and then run the main operating system on a an SSD/hard disk or USB stick. I might actually purchase an actual PI power supply or have a look as to where I can a good one in Australia.
If I can get this going on a USB drive should be good.
Yeah, Jank - I'm not to sure what's happening, the PI is outside also under a covered area so I wouldn't think it would be that. Yes, downloading Raspbian now along with Berryboot, so hopefully those work nicely together.
Seems like a nice setup Phil, I've wondered about HD movies on the PI, no lag? That's the only thing that's stopped me getting a 2nd one for entertainment purposes.
Thankyou all for your replies.
End.

Re: raspberry pi 3
Using Openelec 6.3 on a Berryboot setup I have no lag whatsoever on full HD (Blu-Ray quality) on a Raspberry Pi 2. Also runs all On demand TV stations Live without lag on 1080pi.

Re: raspberry pi 3
I bit the bullet and bought a Raspberry PI 3 kit. I have installed Mono and downloaded and extracted Cumulus MX. I realize I will have to FTP the Cumulus MX web template to my web site. What files do I want to copy over to the CumulusMX folder on the PI 3? I know I want cumulus.ini. Can I just copy over what's in the data folder in Cumulus? Is there anything else I need?
I am running a Davis Vantage Pro 2.

Re: raspberry pi 3
Yes, you can just copy the data folder. Make sure your Pi is running the same date/time formats, setting it to US should do it. Note that you'll need to edit Cumulus.ini to at least set the com port name, and change any file paths to match the new system. I think there is information about this in the announcement, and I also answered a similar question quite recently.

Re: raspberry pi 3
Thanks for the help. I got my station talking to WU with CumulusMX on the Raspberry Pi 3. The last hurdle was figuring out the port for the Davis VP2. It was /device/ttyUSB0 as in discussed in the FAQ. Being a Linux newbie I forgot that case matters. Now the next step is updating the web site files and getting CumulusMX to run at bootup.
OK VP3 was a typo but you already knew that.

I am running the Pi 3 "headless" now using the Fire SSH add in for Firefox. I found I needed to install and use Screen to keep CumulusMX running after I closed the remote terminal window. (Yes, I know that is covered here.)
