New computer - help needed!

Post by scarbopaul »

Evening!

I have a new computer with windows 10. I've been running cumulus fine for 2 years with vantage vue 2. No problems.
I transferred the software and data files to the new computer.
I'm running a USB connection but cumulus won't connect. Can't find the port.
I seem to remember this issue when I first setup but can't remember how to fix it.

Any help greatly appreciated!! :)

Have you installed the virtual serial port drivers, and if so do you have the correct com port number in Cumulus?

Thanks Steve,

I think I got a bit ahead of myself. I'm rubbish with computers! I've copied the previous software and files from the old computer and dropped them onto the new computer.
It took ages to set up last time and I've got twitter links and WOW etc and obviously 2 years worth of data. I'd normally uninstall and reinstall the cumulus software but I'm nervy I'll lose all my settings and data.

The issue is downloading the CP210X convertor from the weatherlink site. (the preinstalled one in the weatherlink software doesn't find the station). I get an error message saying CP210xManufacturing.dll is not present on the computer. But it is! It's in the folders I've pulled across.

I'm so tech illiterate and apologise if it's me being dumb! I would appreciate any help.

Have you tried the converter from the Silicon Labs site?

The fact that the DLL is in a folder that you've copied doesn't mean that something else will be able to find it. Normally it would have to be in a system folder or in the same folder as whatever it is you're running/installing.

You should be aiming to get Weatherlink working first (making sure you are running it in serial mode not USB mode) because if WL won't work, Cumulus won't work.

Can't even get WL to find the station. hovers over com port 3 and thinks about it then gives up. So frustrating. I've followed all the steps and not getting anywhere.
Fixed what I thought was the initial issue, as suggested I moved the downloaded convertor into the same folder as the dll. I don't get the error message now. Just that no device was found.

Well and truly stumped.....

Morning Steve,

Yeah I've done that. It's showing in the listed devices and is COM3. Driver working.

Ah, OK. If WL can't connect in serial mode using that virtual serial port then I'm afraid I have no idea what the problem might be.

most DLL's need registered with windows so it knows where they are. just copying them in can work "sometimes" but usually the installation program will register them within windows.

have you tried to register the dll with regsrv32 ?

I've almost given up!

Stripped it all, uninstalled everything inc WL. reinstalled. Followed all the wiki advice. Still nothing.
Bearing in mind this is a brand new computer. The physical connection exists. I really don't understand what could be wrong.

It's driving me nuts!!

The curser still hovers over COM3 like its thinking about it.

I've run the CP210X by adding it to the folder that the dll is located and it ran but obviously couldn't find the device!
:groan: :groan:

Has anyone else had similar issues?

firstly try putting the dll into c:\windows\system32

failing that try registering the dll

then drop to a admin command prompt,

regsrv32 <path_to>\whateverthename.dll

also in device manager on your new computer are there any devices listed that have an exclamation mark against them?

Update!

I'm on!
At last. I could kick myself. I'd knocked the data logger out when moving to the new PC. I noticed and replaced it thinking no more of it.

It was only as I was playing around with the BAUD rate trying everything that I remembered. I pulled the power, reset the console and boom. Job done.

Let that be a lesson for me. Always go back to basics first.

Apologies and thank you both for your time.
