Vantage Vue
Vantage Vue
I just visited the Davis website and noticed they have introduced a new entry level wireless station, the Vantage Vue. One thing I found interesting is that the Vantage Vue will calculate and display a 2 minute average wind speed! The console is compatable with the Vantage Pro 2 ISS and is available seperately. I think a 2 minute average is the standard in the USA for the NWS ASOS hourly surface wind speed.

Re: Vantage Vue
Does it do a 10 minute speed as well, like the VP2?
It seems an odd beast to me, with the anemometer, rain gauge, and thermometer all stuck together. It seems to me that siting it is going to be difficult.

Yes, the spec. sheet lists both 2 and 10 minute average wind capability for the Vantage Vue. I believe 10 Minute wind is the WMO spec. right?steve wrote:Does it do a 10 minute speed as well, like the VP2?
I agree! My VP2 setup is a good example of where a one site sensor suite would not be very accurate. Like many home setups, I have various trees and shrubs that require the wind sensor to be placed high on the peak of my roof, not a place I want to record temperature and humidity. I have the ISS located over a grass lawn at about 1.4m and the anemometer on the roof with a seperate wireless transmitter at about 8m.steve wrote:It seems an odd beast to me, with the anemometer, rain gauge, and thermometer all stuck together. Steve, what's the chance of having an option to pick what the average wind speed time interval is in Cumulus 2?

Yes, that's right.Dave wrote:I believe 10 Minute wind is the WMO spec. right?
I was thinking of offering 2-minute in addition to 10-minute. But I suppose a completely free choice is a possibility too.Steve, what's the chance of having an option to pick what the average wind speed time interval is in Cumulus 2?![]()

OK, here you go again, an additional option...
Well, this time Dave will be in charge of explaining its purpose...

Well, this time Dave will be in charge of explaining its purpose...
But it will be a good suggestion and a good addition to Cumulus 2...
Make Cumulus 2 as flexible and yet as complete as possible with the use of options (check marks) - and I am serious about that...

Re: Vantage Vue
Actually, I was only thinking of the two options, but a free choice would be very cool too!steve wrote:I was thinking of offering 2-minute in addition to 10-minute. But I suppose a completely free choice is a possibility too.
Wow! I didn't know making a request for a feature in Cumulus 2 required me to testify before the Cumulus Court!gemini06720 wrote:Well, this time Dave will be in charge of explaining its purpose
Seriously though, as stated above I know of at least two average wind speed standards in wide use and there are probably others too. Steve's idea of making the time interval a free choice would cover any of them, allowing the user to pick any value they want.

Re: Vantage Vue
Dave, you certainly do not have to testify before any court!
A few messages back, in another forum, I asked Steve to include the automatic creation, in real time (every few seconds), of 3 files: 'realtime.txt', 'cumulustags.php' and 'cumulustags.xml' - with an option (check marks) to activate the creation of any/all of the 3 files.
To which Steve indicated that I would be the one that would have to explain to all users the purpose of the files being created...
Thus my comment that you would have to explain to the users the purpose of this new option ... since you requested that new option...

I knew that! I'm just joking around a bit.gemini06720 wrote:Dave, you certainly do not have to testify before any court!

Re: Vantage Vue
But I was not joking about the facts that you, Dave, will have to explain to the users the reasons why they now have a choice of 2 or 10 minutes or even free choice for the average wind information...Dave wrote:I knew that! I'm just joking around a bit.Dave

Re: Vantage Vue
Well, he tries, by putting it in the documentation. But I can't force everyone to read that, and sometime my explanations may be insufficient anyway.gemini06720 wrote:Steve cannot explain to everyone everything...

Re: Vantage Vue
Steve...
I have this most
devilish
and twisted idea: Before anyone can download and installed Cumulus, a questionnaire must be completed once the documentation has been read...
I know you try very hard and in a timely manner to answer every questions asked (and even those not-yet-asked-questions) and for that I am very very grateful.
But, a large number of those questions have already been answered in the documentation and for that I am ... let me just say/write, I am very disappointed that users cannot be bothered to even read what has been provided to them.
Maybe it is time to force the users to look at the documentation by stating, as an answer, that such and such problem can be easily corrected by having a look at page ## of the documentation...
I know, I know, it would take way too much time to refer a large number of users to the documentation ... it is much faster to just write down what you know rather than forcing anyone to do their own studying...
Thank you for being so patient with all our stupid questions...

Re: Vantage Vue
Something like that did cross my mind briefly; I did think about hiding the answer to a question in the documentation somewhere, which was required before Cumulus would rungemini06720 wrote:I have this mostdevilish

It's frustrating, but basically, most people don't read documentation. And I'm as guilty as anyoneBut, a large number of those questions have already been answered in the documentation and for that I am ... let me just say/write, I am very disappointed that users cannot be bothered to even read what has been provided to them.![]()
