Dates for minimum temperature and rainfall

Post by billy »

Here in Australia, the official weather statistics (BOM - government Bureau of Meteorology) for temperature and rainfall uses 0900 as the start of the meteorological day so it was nice to discover this facility is available in Cumulus. However, at 9 am on a given day BOM records the minimum temperature and total rainfall for the past 24 hours against that day's date (ie the date at 9 am, not the previous day). It records the maximum temperature against the previous day's date. Cumulus seems to record the minimum temperature and daily rainfall total against the previous day's date just as it does for maximum temperature.

Is there a way of circumventing this - other than manually editing all the records?

A search of the FAQ and forum doesn't seem to flag the issue, although I am a novice with both Cumulus and weather stations (WMR200) so please be gentle!

And just to add more confusion the BOM uses 0000 hours for wind statistics.

Overall, Cumulus is very impressive. Easy to set up, import some old data I had, and establish a website

One of the reasons I wrote Cumulus in the first place was that I wanted to use an 0900 start of day, as used by professional meteorologists doing manual readings in the UK. Unfortunately I didn't fully understand the requirements at the time, and so Cumulus logs everything against the previous day. This is not correct, either in the UK or Australia, as you point out some items are logged against the previous date and some against the current date, and I think the 'rules' even differ between our two countries.

I can't think of any way that you can circumvent this other than by editing the data. Or you could feed your data into an SQL database and generate your own daily summary data. It is possible that I will look at providing more flexibility in this area in the future, in Cumulus MX.

Thanks. It would be a nice modification. If I remember correctly the current behaviour of Cumulus with regard to rainfall is correct for New Zealand - they record it against the previous day. Not sure about minimum temperature.

And I might add that I'm about to try MX but wanted to iron out a few issues like the one I raised before taking that step.
