I used Android TV box, a Dual Core A20 Android 4.2.2 STB, for less than 50€ including importing customs.
It is also possible to use Android TV Stick, but you might need additional USB hub...
After first boot, make sure you're connected to internet, i prefer static IP if possible, run Google Play Store
install Linux Deploy application.

Follow instructions and install Debian, or any other distro from the list it supports.
I picked Debian wheezy without desktop, just SSH service to control.
After a coffe, it may take some time to install the system, simply run it.
Make sure to enable autorun of your distro on poweroff/reboot.

Connect to your distro with Putty or any other similar software.
Since "mono-complete" does not exists in wheezy, we need to add repository
