Alternative setup - Android TV box

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

Alternative setup - Android TV box

Post by TgT »

I would like to present an alternative setup i picked up today after finding rs232 to usb adapter to use my old WMR928 station ;)

I used Android TV box, a Dual Core A20 Android 4.2.2 STB, for less than 50€ including importing customs.

It is also possible to use Android TV Stick, but you might need additional USB hub...

After first boot, make sure you're connected to internet, i prefer static IP if possible, run Google Play Store
install Linux Deploy application.
Linux Deploy
Follow instructions and install Debian, or any other distro from the list it supports.
I picked Debian wheezy without desktop, just SSH service to control.
After a coffe, it may take some time to install the system, simply run it.
Make sure to enable autorun of your distro on poweroff/reboot.

default SSH
user: android
password: changeme
TIP: change the password with passwd command

Connect to your distro with Putty or any other similar software.

Since "mono-complete" does not exists in wheezy, we need to add repository

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 3FA7E0328081BFF6A14DA29AA6A19B38D3D831EF
echo "deb http://download.mono-project.com/repo/debian wheezy main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-xamarin.list
sudo apt-get update
Now we are ready to install mono-complete and some extra applications like unzip and screen to make life easier

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mono-complete unzip screen
Grab CumulusMX with wget, unzip it and run it screen mode.

You may also want to autorun CumulusMX, use the search function ;)

Hope this helps or gives some idea, bye bye
