Internet Explorer

Post by PaulMy »

As a mainly Internet Explorer user I have read many comments on the pros and cons of other browsers. I have found at least 2 of my pages/scripts that do not display correctly on Windows 8 IE10 but ok on FF - i.e. www.komokaweather.com/gauges-ss/gauges-ss.htm (no gauges displayed) and www.komokaweather.com/weather/davconvp2CU.php (lower button menu incorrect layout)

These all work ok on Windows 7 IE11. I have searched Microsoft and find that IE11 cannot be used on Windows 8 and I do not want to upgrade to Windows 8.1 on my weather computer for fear that many of my weather related programs might not work.

Is there any other way to make those scripts work in IE10, or another option other than upgrade to Windows 8.1 and IE11 or another browser?

I'm still using W7, but all those who talk to me about W8 have swapped to W8.1 and been happy that is better! Perhaps, Paul, your fear is groundless (compatibility mode?)?

I'm not a fan of IE (I started with Netscape, and adopted Firefox when that arrived) . It scares me how many professionally designed established web pages are very complicated just to cope with all versions of IE. Apparently relatively few people use IE (You make up your own mind what suits you, Paul) and for some years now I have seen that newer web sites are written to conform to latest standards and thus be right in all modern browsers. I have heard some scare stories about security problems with IE saying, now it is no longer supported by Microsoft, hackers are exploiting it.

I use Win 8.1 and IE11 as my main machine. All others (and I have a few!) run win7, also with IE11. However IE11 on win7 is not quite the same as it is on win 8.1

There are regular funny things going on with IE but currently have no issues with the SSGauges nor the davconvp2CU scripts.

One of the main issues I have found with IE10 and 11 has been the handling of forms.

Do the ssgauges and davcon scripts work OK on our websites (both Saratoga and Cumulus)?

Edit:-
Both ssGauges and davcon scripts work from here with Win8.1/IE11 on both your .com and .ca sites

Yes both console and gauges work on the other browsers just not IE10. I have a Windows 7 (upgraded from Vista) and Windows 8.1 laptop (which was Windows 8 and MS tricked me to upgrade to 8.1) both with IE11 and there the script both work fine. I'd like them to work on the weather computer so I can see what is happening when there are scripts upgrades and modifications to be made.

A significant reason for continuing with IE, well 2; our son-in-law may stop getting me some of the nice MS give-away (he works for them), and I've got so many Favourites organized in IE that I would need to redo

If I were to upgrade to 8.1 would that be only a Windows upgrade and everything else stays the same - Cumulus, Toolbox, Yawcam, etc,? When MS surprisingly updated the laptop from 8 to 8.1 my main program (Simply Accounting) continued to work fine without any changes to be made, but my Office Excel went into a strange format and had to do a lot of setting changes so I could read the text, and that is what scared me.

Thanks for the comments.

Sorry, missed a critical point in your first post - IE10!

However I did run win8/IE10 for a time before the progression to win8.1/IE10.
I don't recall any issues with the davcon scripts but did not run ssgauges at all until MX.
As I see it you have three options;
Downgrade back to Win7, Upgrade to Win8.1, or use another browser.

Bear in mind that before too long, there will be increasing pressure to upgrade win7 & win8/8.1 to Win10 with the new Edge browser unless you resist the pressure that will be coming from MS! IE11 is supposed to run on win10 as well but as a "second class citizen" according to some testers - exciting (dangerous?) times ahead!

One obvious thing I forgot to mention, both these scripts did run fine on Windows 8 IE10. I first noticed the problem with gauges-ss a couple months ago, and the console script bottom button layout just this week. Likely this is a result of MS upgrade(s). I am presuming anyone else with IE10 sees the same problem?!?

I'll think on upgrading...

Paul, I suspect it is loading the page in a compatibility mode. There may be a broken page icon in the address bar - try clicking it.

I see now I put my point in a concise but not clear way! Thanks Mark for combining brevity with clearness.

My only excuse is that it is quite a while since I have tested any of my creations in IE, so although I got the Microsoft terminology right, I completely forgot to mention the icon looked like a broken page, to make it clear what "compatibility mode" I meant.

And saying too much about my other thoughts, added to the confusion I caused. I'm always multi-tasking too much.

(Edits: to get grammar/spelling right after I re-read thread!).

  and thanks to all for your comment and suggestion. I think Mark you had guided me about Compatibility view 2-3 years ago and I had kept that in my mind, just hadn't thought that would be the cause this time. Just click on the little icon and all is well!

If only I could remember all the lessons I have learned...

Hi Paul
I checked out the two links you posted, plus several of your other pages on Windows 10 (beta) and IE 11. All look good. I am using Win 10 on my "weather computer" running Cumulus1. In my experience Cumulus 1 has worked well on this machine using Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1 and Win 10.
I also tried CumulusMX/Saratoga and Win 10 earlier, which initially worked well. I tried "fine tuning" that combo and and as a result the wheels fell off. :( When time permits, I'll have another go at that setup.
