Problems Converting to USB Virtual Serial - One Solution

Post by laserfc »

I first tried the Davis Weatherlink software and then needed to convert back to the virtual USB serial converter to run Cumulus.

I had no end of problems and tried all of the solutions on other threads but none worked.

Eventually I found on the Davis website the following:

WeatherLink Utility: CP210X USB to Serial Converter

Download (112 KB)

This utility ships with WeatherLink 5.8.0, but will not run due to a compile error. This update, version 2.0, works properly.

Note: This download only applies to users of WeatherLink 5.8.0 and a USB WeatherLink data logger.

Although the update is updated 2008 the CD shipped to me in 2015 with Weatherlink 6.0.3 2012 still has the old utility.

I replaced the utility with version 2, it has to be in the directory with the dll, it runs a command window and says running and at the end confirms the conversion back to serial has taken place. Cumulus then worked straight away.

This is the url for the download

Is that not the same utility as the one linked to in the FAQ that covers this?

If you read the FAQ it says use the version you find in the Weatherlink Folder which on my system loaded from the 6.0.3 2012 CD supplied is the old version of the converter. It was as a last resort I checked for a new download.

Here is an extract from the FAQ:

You now need to install the 'CP210X USB to Serial Converter'. You may find a link on your Start menu under 'Weatherlink'. Alternatively, you should find it in the folder where Weatherlink was installed, under 'Support' then 'Utilities'. Davis also make it available on their web site, here

My suggestion is to change the FAQ to say " Check to make sure you have the following file in the Weatherlink Directory CP210X_USB_Serial_Converter_ver2.exe if your file is not ver2 then you must download the latest copy of CP210X here as the previous version has a compile error.

I've changed the FAQ to make it clearer that the intention is that you should download the utility from Davis if the installed version doesn't work (some of the installed versions do work).

Have to say that I've never come across a situation where the default install version has failed to work when run as per instructions (other than a handful of cases where the logger was faulty, but that's very rare). If you look at the release dates, you'll see that the original bug was squashed very quickly (in Jan 2008).

@laserfc: What leads you to think that the original (unfixed) version is still being distributed? The fact that the installed file doesn't have ver2 in the exe name?
