Cumulus Data Problem

Post by Dollsworth »

Hi all,

I loaded Cumulus this morning and for some unknown reason it did not capture any of the past 24 hour's data, and only displayed the values when i last turned Cumulus off, and the when I turned Cumulus on (i.e. on all the graphs it just had a straight line from this morning's values to last night's values) - any ideas?

Here's an example of what happened today. The station is set to take readings every hour, but clearly that is not the case here. I turned Cumulus off at 07:00, and turned it back on at 19:20 this evening:

Are you looking in the right place? Are you running Vista or Windows 7? If so, look in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Cumulus.

If not, there's something weird going on which is probably related to your problem.

Yep, have checked again and the Diags folder is empty! What is normally stored in this folder?
I can zip my data folder if you wish?

Each time you start up, Cumulus creates a file in there with diagnostic information - it's rather like the debug file, if you've seen one of those. It would have told me why Cumulus didn't download your data at startup. I really don't know how it can be empty. You do have files in the data folder, then? They're not going to help, though, unfortunately.

What version of Windows are you using?

Vista - I installed Cumulus about a week ago on this laptop, has worked fine (apart from when the base station loses signal somehow due to the USB adapater - see other thread) until this morning where it just hasn't stored any data! WS2350 btw.

Edit: have tried to download the data on my other desktop PC which has had Cumulus running since January, no such luck either! Something happened overnight and I don't know what! :o :(

I have no 'AppData' option under my username?

To access the Cumulus folder, I use C:\Program Files\Cumulus\Diags

It's a hidden folder (!). If you don't know how to view hidden folders:

1. Click on the Start button and select the Control Panel menu option.

2. If you are in the Classic View - double-click on the Folder Options icon, then Click on the View tab. If you are in the ControlPanel Home View - click on Appearance and Personalization, then click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.

3. In Hidden Files and Folders section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders". Also, uncheck the checkbox labeled "Hide extensions for known file types". Finally, Uncheck the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files".

If you're not running Cumulus as administrator, all of the files which Cumulus writes (data, diags etc) will be in this hidden folder, and not where you installed Cumulus. This whole situation is partly my fault, for which I'm sorry, and partly Microsoft's fault for not pro-actively telling people this would happen.

Vista makes novices of all of us. Windows 7 (= Vista fixed) is pretty good, though, in my opinion.

Anyway, to your problem: The clock in your station thinks it is the year 2000. So when Cumulus asks for the recent data, it says it hasn't got any. Compare before:

Looking at the latest log, the clock is back in the present. Does it get set from a time signal?

Cumulus has been working fine since this morning apparently, that might be why? And yes it updates at 2am every morning (I think)

Yes, the clock was still wrong last night, but correct this morning, so this morning it successfully downloaded the data.

I suppose Cumulus ought to put something in the error log and flash the error light if the station clock differs from the PC clock by more than a certain amount, say an hour, on those types of station where it matters.
