Shield for temp sensor

Hi Guys

I have a Fine Offset (equivalent) PCE-FWS 20 weather station. At this time of year I find that I get incorrect and wildly high temp readings when the sun decides to shine on a cold day. This is obviously due to the weather stations solar shield being inadequate for the job it should do (yes I know it's a cheapie station)

Okay so has anyone made a secondary shield that will fit around the temp sensor without messing up the solar charger on the top, and that will fit on the stations standard bracket? I would welcome any suggestions or ideas on how to make one. I would so love to have more accurate temperature readings. No issue when it's cloudy, but as soon as that sun shows its head, they go very wrong.

Many thanks all

Hi Nick,

Search the forum for "Stevenson Screen", but most will normally contain the temperature transmitter, rather that sit on it (like the FO screen). Typically, the small ones use a stack of plastic "soup plates", although I believe fibreglass has been suggested as a better material.

Does your station transmit solar data or is it just solar powered? If only solar powered, I would just dump the Solar Pod, mount the transmitter in a shady location and fit decent primary (non-rechargeable) lithium or alkaline cells.

If it transmits Solar Data, then IMHO you need to extend the cable and mount the Pod and Temperature sensors in different (more optimum) locations. This is what I have done and did briefly describe the options in a post some months ago.

Cheers, Alan.

Or do like this gentleman. Seems to have been VERY successful....I guess only some white paint should make a lot better since the original is grey and bit translucent.
