New davis iss

Post by warhead »

Hello.

Just got a new iss for my Davis Vantage Vue, since i my old one was showing to low rain and sometimes to high windgust.
But my console is not finding/receiving signal from the new iss.
And i have checked that the new iss has the ID 1 just as the old one.
And i have set the old iss to id 7 and not receiving data.
When i enter the meny "receiving from" on the concole, it only find the old iss.
Have tried to take the battery from the old iss, so it's just the new iss that is transmitting, but the consol don't find the signal from the new iss.
The new iss are transmitting and has the green led light.
Anyone know what coud be wrong??

Thanks in advance.

Are the old and new ISS' both transmitting on the same frequency?
If you purchased the new ISS from a different country from the original ISS/Console, then there may be a mismatch.

If that looks OK, then I suggest you set the new ISS to channel 2 and change the setting in the console to receive from channel 2 to be sure there is no interference from the old ISS. As it appears you still have the original ISS mounted it is likely running off the solar panel or supercap - the battery is only for backup when solar/supercap are not able to supply.

Thanx for your reply, BCJKiwi.

I think i got my original ISS/Console from england when i got it on amazon some few years ago.
And the new ISS i got from Germany.

Have tried to set the new ISS to channel ID 2 and changed the setting in the console to receive from channel ID 2, but with no luck. Have also tried channel ID 3.

Have also tried to reboot both the consol and the ISS and waitet 30 minutes before installing new batterys, but with no luck.

Just to let everyone know, that the consol has model no: 6250 and the old ISS model no: 6250.

On the new ISS, the model no is 6357ov. So maybe the console is not capable of receiving data from this new ISS, since it has another model no??

Sorry, I did not read your original message fully.
I would expect the Wireless transmitter frequency to be on a label somewhere - on a sticker on the ISS?

I believe the UK uses 868.0-868.6 MHz and the UK and EU are supposed to use the same. OV simply signifies that it is a VUE ISS without Console.
If the frequencies on new and old are the same then I would suggest you power down the console and restart it (if you have not done this already) so it does a full search of what is out there.

Trust you do realise that the console will only connect to 1 ISS at a time so when adding the new unit at ID 2, you need to make sure that the old one at ID 1 (or 7 or wherever it is now) is not set to ISS.

Most of this is in the Manual and you need to follow the proper procedure nominated there to fully shut down the console.

I find on the VUE it does take a while for the Console to link up to the ISS - some times up to 3 minutes.
I see you say the green light is on. If you press the button once briefly, it should flash the number of times to show the ID number, pause, then blink for a while until it syncs to the console, then go off. It should not stay on permanently. The manual describes this process.

The manual also indicates that during setup, screen 5 should show all station IDs being received. What do you see there? It should show all - including others nearby if in range!

Thanx again for yout reply, BCJKiwi :)

First of all, on screen 5, the consol don't show any station been received.

Have looked at the ISS and the consol, but can't find the transmitter frequency on the labels.

I have power down the console and restart it and did the same with the new ISS, but with no luck.

And i know that the consol will only connect to 1 ISS, so the old ISS is not in use, only the new one.

I have now set the new ISS and consol back ti ID 1. All other ID on the consol is set to "off"

There is a green light on the ISS. When briefly pressing the button, it flashes only once before pause. then blink for å little while. So the ISS is set to ID 1 and trasmitting.

Have tried everything in the manual, and followed the procedure, so i cant understand why the consol dont pick up the signal from the ISS.

Begining to think that the consol and ISS have diffrent frequency.

Does the existing console have the model no 6250 (only) or with a suffix eg 6250UK or 6250EU? Or is the old ISS 6357 rather than 6357OV? If there is no suffix then this is the US wireless spec and will never talk to an EU spec unit.

Hi John.

The existing consol have the model no 6250 only with no suffix.
The old ISS there is two numbers. The model no 6250 and #6357,
and the new ISS have two identical number. Model no. 6357OV.

So, does that meen that my consol is a US model?

To the best of my knowledge: no suffix ≡ US model

But no-one in the UK should be selling US spec stations, certainly not on Amazon. eBay might be a different story of course. Something doesn't add up here.

Thanx for the reply, John.

Looks like i'm going to get a onother consol or upgrade to Vantage Pro 2.

For now, the old ISS up and running, but sometimes it does not record rain or to little rain and sometimes it shows to high wind gusts. So something is wrong with the old ISS.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help :D

Not sure about the 'extra' codes.
In New Zealand I purchased a VUE from the primary NZ reseller.
It has 6250M on its label - ie M for Metric.
There is no AU or NZ as one might expect.
however there is a bright purple/pink label on the box saying "New Zealand Version".

This suggests there are alternate ways to get the 'right' frequency without a country code.
Having taken the cover off the top of the VUE ISS, the transmitter module has a sticker on it reading P/N : 07345.918
I note the US spares have a P/N of 07345.912
So maybe you could swap the transmitter module - that is if the cabling can be swapped with these new-fangled potted units.

You might at least check to see if the P/Ns on the old and new units is the same.
John - what is the corresponding part number for the UK? This might help to determine if the original unit is US or UK.

Regarding the issues with the old ISS, Spiders and other bugs can cause problems and apparently some of the older units suffered poor weather protection and thus there is some moisture ingress into the connections. Maybe you cold check to see if there is anything obvious going on inside.
The first stage of disassembly is simple;
shut down the console
take out the ISS battery
take off the anemometer cups - small grub screw - just lifts off.
undo the 4 screws holding the white top section onto the black base and lift off the top.

This will let you see the part numbers and if there is any obvious problem with bugs, moisture etc.

OK, I was trying to keep the previous post brief, but to expand on a few details.

From memory (it's not a model we ever see as such), 6250M is a metric version made for the N America market, possibly more for Canada, but also for any US users who prefer to follow international standards for units. So it's still the case that no suffix would be the norm for the US, but yes an M suffix is a variation on this.

Aus/NZ AIUI (it's a long way from here and again isn't a model we would ever see, though we did have a customer phoning from Australia today for delivery ultimately to Baku - he's picking the unit up in person in London tomorrow!) is a special case. Again AIUI these are basically US spec units (but in the M variation - because that would be the local preference) that leave the factory as such but are then modified, I guess locally in ANZ, to limit the frequency range to comply with local regulations.

Spares part numbers are a little complicated for the Vue:

Rev A-F with the separate transmitter module have .912 (US) and .913 (OV)

Rev G is a special case

Rev M onwards are the all-in-one harness with .917 as the OV part. It's not on the list I have here but again from memory .918 would be the US part.

OK, Well that would mean the NZ model I have (which has a G at the beginning of the number below the part number) is locally adapted to NZ frequency from the US standard unit.

So, presumably any Davis distributor with the 'magic' resetting software could change Glenn's console to match his new ISS.

ANZ is an unusual case. For all of the rest of the world AFAIK either US-spec or OV parts are sold as appropriate to that territory and so there is no requirement for any 'magic' software outside of ANZ. Even in ANZ, I suspect that Davis have written the required special firmware to program the ISS and console (though having written that, I really don't know how the ISS is reprogrammed - I guess there must be a way - console F/W updates being commonplace but ISS updates non-existent). But I know we're only talking about the console F/W here, for receiving data from the 'wrong' ISS.

But this would require knowledge from someone who's hacked the console firmware - not in the public domain AFAIK and not generally known by distributors either.

There is discussion in NZ from time to time advising users who have imported US equipment into NZ to take their gear to the distributor to have it changed to NZ frequency.
Presumably that would require changing the transmitter in the ISS and reprogramming the Console.
All seems a bit over the top when the same hardware is used everywhere so there must be an initial programming routine and therefore presumably a re-programming option as well.
Anyway it does not seem to be much help to the original poster.

The issue for us is that the cost of NZ equipment is very significantly higher than importing from USA.
My last purchase was therefore a cabled VP2 ex USA.
Now looking to sell my VUE once testing for MX is complete.
