adjusting rain for today in Sept09log.txt not possible?

Post by Gordon-Loomberah »

I just edited a 2 spurious mm of rain out of all the entries for the past hour or so in Sept09log.txt to bring the LaCrosse back into agreement with my rain gaug (and correct the record for highest daily rain (since July anyway)) for today, but upon restarting it went back to the original 30mm instead of 28. Where is Cumulus picking the 30mm up from, if not the log? I had a look through various threads but didnt really find an answer. I realise I can edit the all time records directly after 9am tomorrow.

I'm also wondering what units the start value is in the today.ini file, it doesnt seem to be anything like it should for rain up to 9am (in mm) this morning for the month.

thanks, Gordon

The station supplies an ever-increasing counter of the number of tips of the rain gauge, and Cumulus has to work out the daily rain using the value of that counter compared to the value at the start of day. The start value in today.ini is that value, converted to the units that you are using. The current value is logged in the monthly log file (the "Total rainfall counter") for reference.

So, to set today's rainfall to a particular value, you need to set the start value in today.ini to the current value less whatever you want today's value to be.

Current value was 30, I wanted 28. today.ini start value was 31.59
I would think from the above that the start value should be set to 30-2= 2.
That actually caused an increase in the current value, to 61 I think, but reducing the start value by anything always increased the current value. The only way to decrease the current value to what I wanted was to add the difference to the start value, so I made it 33.59 and got my required 28.
I dont understand that at all. :o
I think my head is going to explode

The 'current value' I referred to was the current value of the total rainfall counter (that's why I mentioned the field 'total rainfall counter'). Decreasing the start value (the snapshot of the total at the start of day) is always going to increase today's rainfall total because today's total is calculated from:

current total - start of day total

You can do it without using the current counter if you do what you eventually did, and do it relatively. You want to decrease today's total by 2. To achieve that you increase the start of day figure by two, so the calculation above comes out two lower.

Sorry to steal the thread, but I believe I have a related question, which I haven't managed to find an answer to after searching.

I recently purchased a WH1080, and am using Cumulus, however on the day I set it up (August 25th) it falsely recorded a rainfall of 3mm. Since then I have the rainfall recorded in the daily records, as well as the record highs (All time high rain rate, All time high daily rain, All time hourly rain, and highest monthly rain). I'd now like to correct these all back to zero - preferably without disturbing the other records.

As stated in the beginning of this thread, I have gone through Aug09.txt, and Sep09.txt and adjusted entries stating "3.0" and "32.4" (rainfall rate) to read "0.0".

However I still see all the rainfall records in the records tab.

Please can you confirm where I need to make the change to reset the rainfall records.

FYI, there has been no rainfall here since the 25 August.

Thanks,

Dave.

The all-time record editor on the edit menu is what you need.

You haven't mentioned dayfile.txt, which is where the daily totals are stored, and from which the monthly and annual totals are calculated. You'll need to edit the total for August 25th if you haven't already done so.

Thanks, changing the dayfile and using the editor did the trick; I didn't realise the record editor was there.

Many thanks for your support and your great product, once the weather pages come out of testing, I'll be donating for sure.

Dave.
