Problem with USB adapter

Post by Dollsworth »

Hi all,

There may be a thread on this already - I've had a look around and couldn't find one, so if someone knows where there is a thread please could you point me in the right direction - many thanks! :D

I've been running Cumulus since I purchased my WS2350 in January this year. Up until last week I ran Cumulus on a standard desktop PC, but have since changed to using a laptop. As a result, I've needed to use the USB adapter since the laptop doesn't have the required connection that my old desktop had.
Ever since I've used my laptop, my base station 'appears' to lose contact with the outdoor gadgets (it's wireless by the way). Whenever I have the base station plugged into my laptop via the USB adapter, it will lose signal and never return for hours, until I pull the USB lead out of the laptop. I have no idea why this is happening, nor how to resolve, but it is very frustrating because it means I cannot provide Live Data to my website any longer. It seems obvious that this is something to do with the USB adapter which somehow cuts the signal from the outdoor gadgets to the base station.

Any ideas?

Thanks in adance :)

Your laptop could well be set to drop power to USB ports to conserve power. You would need to check your power settings.

What O/S are you using? Windows XP, Windows Vista, 7 ....?

I'm using Vista, but have checked this out with my old PC and exactly the same thing happens, yet my old PC is running on Windows XP instead.

Dolly I managed to fix a similar problem with my Serial/USB adapter.
I trawled around the internet and found a more updated driver. In my case its a Prolific driver (link at bottom if yours is the same)
Since updating I have had no issues with the adapter.

So it might be worth your while looking around for the correct driver for your adapter as Windows doesn't necessarily have the best driver but may use a generic driver instead hence some problems we have been experiencing.

Hope this helps
