Cumulus Snowfall - calculation/estimations

Hello Steve and all Weather Gurus - First post here but have been enjoying Cumulus for a couple of years now. Cumulus software is by far the best thing out there and I have donated accordingly.

I live in Maine, USA and we receive a good amount of snow each winter (Its snowing as I write this). I have installed the heating element from Davis so I can get the liquid measurement of snowfall. I realize that the most accurate way to get snowfall amounts is to do a visual measurement. With that said I feel with the data that is collected (particularly if you have a heating element in your rain bucket to melt snow) it would not be difficult to add Snowfall Estimation and Accumulation features/fields in Cumulus.

I know that it is not 100%, particularly on days hovering around the freezing mark. Is 1.0c here today and snowing and accumulating. So if the Snowfall Feature was part of Cumulus it would most likely determine I'm getting rain.

Anyway, I think it would be a cool feature nevertheless - Thoughts?

Jim

Interesting suggestion. I do intend to add some better snowfall reporting to the new version of Cumulus at some point. This could be a useful addition for those who have a heater in their rain gauge.

Hi Steve,

Just to add to this topic, I too have a rain gauge fitted with a heater and I do track snowfall amounts - measuring the water content via the gauge, also use a COCORAHS rain gauge to measure and compare with the Davis heated unit. On the whole the results are very closely matched which is interesting. I would love snow measurements to be implemented in Cumulus, and yes I have sent a small donation to aid the efforts.

Keep up the good work Steve, we all appreciate it and can't wait for the new version of Cumulus.
