WS 1080 / 1081 - Case dismantling?

Following on from reading the excellent posts on the inside of the 1080/1081 I have a really basic question, how do you take the case apart? I thought a separate thread might be best, as the original is now much further down the road than my very simple query.

I'm getting my second FOffset station this year from Clas O, I sent the first one back because the screen was not readable. However, I have now given up on the Oregon LW301 that I got from Maplin as it is unfortunatley just not reliable enough.

The first thing I intend to do is remove the touch screen, but would like to do so with the minimal amount of damage, just in case some warranty related issues arise. Any advice on stealth mode dismantling and re-mounting the case minus the touch screen would be greatly received.

Thanks

Hi,

The transmitter case is glued and can only be prised apart with a credit card or similar.

The back of the 108x Console is held on by 8 screws which are easy to remove. That will get you to the back of the PCB which carries all the components. If you then remove more screws, that board will come out, perhaps leaving the LCD in the case. The LCD uses only "conductive rubber" connections to the PCB, so should separate easily. But reassembly may not be quite as easy. ;)

I think there are more details in one of the sticky threads in the FO section.

Cheers, Alan.

Many thanks for the info, I was worried that it may involve removing some stickers intended to stop dismantling. I should have the unit on Weds so will delve a bit deeper then.
I should really have done this with the unit I bought and returned in April. Since that time, the spare wind speed and direction units from my previous FO got caught in a wind turbine one very windy day, the wind turbine came out a bit better!

I am puzzled how are you going to setup (e.g. date/time) and monitor the console without the touch screen?

The last unit I had was DCF enabled so set it's own time, I'm hoping that this one will too. I don't recall changing any other settings via the console, but will see what happens. From memory, the easyweather software also allows you to change a few settings via USB. I use the station primarily for the USB connection to Cumulus etc, but it's nice to be able to see the temp, wind speed etc on the display at a glance and without glases.

Hi,

Yes the Clas Ohlson should have the RCC feature, but you probably will need to set the offset by 1 hour from European (German Transmitter) time. Also, things like relative barometric pressure, but maybe that can be done from within Easyweather.

If you want to remove only the touch panel to improve contrast, then I believe somewhere in the sticky threads is a description of how to "map" a handful of normal pushbutton switches to emulate the touch panel (or at least a few functions which might be needed).

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks Alan,

I picked up my new ws1080 yesterday. The case is white as opposed to black or silver and the contrast on the display is much improved from the last one that I had, although it still needs to go to 8, backlights on this unit are blue. The white case looks nice, I'm not sure if it will yellow with age though. It has the DCF function as expected, the timezone and other settings such as mph, c/f etc can be set via Easyweather. For anyone that's interested Clas O are currently selling the unit for £50.
Although the display is not as sharp as the original FO that I had, as I can read this one at a glance without my glasses, I'll probably leave the touchscreen in at least for a while.

A quick update, after having the new station for a couple of weeks.

Today I removed the touch screen, what an amazing difference! I can now read the display without glasses, it's really sharp & clear. Many thanks to those that answered this thread and also posted in the original touchscreen thread. I was able to set all of the needed parameters via easyweather, strangely enough all except the display contrast that is! In order to make up for the lack of touchscreen on the LCD contacts I used some self adhesive felt cut into thin strips. It is a bit thicker than the original touchscreen, so I did not tighten the screws up so much. So far so good.
