Website displaying outdated index pages

Hello,
I have recently started seeing a problem with my website and wonder if any one else has seen anything similar.

I am running Cumulus very successfully on a Windows 7 PC and it uploads files via FTP every 15 minutes to my website.

Since the end of September I noticed that the time stamps on my website seemed to be out of date. If I looked at 16:05hrs the page on my website showed say 15:45hrs.

Initially I assumed that there had been an FTP error/problem but this turned out not to be the case.

If I look at my website every 15 minutes Cumulus successfully uploads all the files it should to my web space.

If I download the index.htm page onto my PC and open it it shows all the correct data/dates/times for that page BUT the webserver shows say upto an hour behind.

The fault tends to 'reset' every 30/45 minutes.

When these 'errors' occur I can look at say Cumulus gauges page and it shows correct times and data, Trends pages are the same, the only thing that is failing is the display of my base index.htm page.

It is not my browsers as I have tried my PC, my Ipad and have asked friends around the globe and they all see the same delay when the fault is there..

I have a 'ticket' on my web provider but they have been 'looking' at this for quite a few days!

Sorry for the ramble but I wanted to get as much info as possible.

Anyone ever had this problem?

I am confident it is not a Cumulus error but does anyone know differently?

Thanks

If the files are being updated and uploaded correctly, the most likely explanation is that the pages are being cached by your browser, at the behest of the web server. Could you give a link to your web site, please?

Hi Steve and thanks for that, it just puzzles me that is should have just started recently.

My site is WWW.dymchurchweather.co.uk

It just seems to come and go all day.

Today it hung on the 12:45hrs page for over an hour then started 'working' again.

It will hang again in the very near future.

I've been watching for about half an hour, and it was OK up until just now, when the server returned a "304 not modified" for the index.htm page. All the others are OK. No amount of refreshing will get an updated page (as of 15:05 it's still sending the 14:45 page). So the server thinks that is the latest file. What I can't tell from here is whether the 15:00 index.htm page actually has been uploaded or not. If it really has, then it must be a problem with the server.

Thanks Steve I do appreciate you spending time on this.

When ever I have this fault showing, I go onto the web server folder where Cumulus is supposed to upload files and I can see the latest timed index.htm page on the server.

If I download it and display it on my PC it is correct.

At the moment 15.44 the server has the 15:30hrs index.htm page sitting there but stubbornly is displaying the 14:45 web page to all viewers.

I am not sure why the server is saying 304 error as I believe Cumulus is doing what it should.

It's almost certainly an issue with the server, I can't see how it could be anything else. The server has the updated file but is serving an old one. And for some reason only the index.htm file is affected. In your ftp client, the index.htm shows (approximately) the same 'last updated' time as the other .htm files, yes?

Yes Steve, if I look at the folder on the server all the files, index.htm included, are within a few seconds of each other in time stamp.

The interesting thing is, if you go to an outdated index.htm page on the server and click on a gauges/trends link they display perfectly timewise.

I will take this information that you have given me and give the webserver supplier a bit more stick.

I will post what, if anything, they come back with.

Thanks for you support.

Well after a lot of pushing and chasing with my Server supplier they have apparently 'forced a configuration update' by rebooting the server.

Since they did this Cumulus has continued uploading correctly, as it has always done and the website now displays totally up to date web pages.

Still a mystery to me how/why it was doing that but it seems to be cured.

Luckily I was not selling stuff on my site as I may have orders at 'old' prices if the pages were not updating!
