vantage vue and weatherlinkip

Hi folks just joined the forum - I live in Darwin Australia and am hoping to get a system installed before our storms start which is anytime now! :)

I am looking at getting a Davis Vantage Vue but I am a bit confused about which logger to get with it. I like the weatherlinkip but I can't find good info on it - all the detail about it on the Davis website seems to mostly be about being able to automatically send data to their web community program which I'm not all that worried about.

I like the idea of not having to have a computer continuously running - will the weatherlinkip allow me to send the data from it to my NAS box for example? IE can you configure it to write to an unc path or ftp etc?

Or if I get the USB logger I guess cumulus will "catch up" when the PC is turned on anyway... although if I want live data and history on the web somewhere I guess cumulus needs to be running all the time anyways?

Sorry if these are dumb questions.. also the loggers usually come with the weatherlink software - if I don't get that software and just the logger what am I missing out on if anything?

Cheers
Paul

The WLIP only sends to Davis net. They then relay it to WU, CWOP (incorrectly) and one other place. You can not configure it to do anything else. You can run cumulus with the WLIP via tcpip. But then you have defeated the purpose of the IP logger. You are really far better off to use the USB logger.

What are the chances of seeing a post from someone else in Darwin on these forums. It's a small world :)

I recently got a Pro2 for the exact same reason Paul, coming up to wet season and was interested in seeing details specific to my place. I decided on the USB logger, simply because I've already got an existing device that is on all the time that I could plug it in to. Like you mentioned if you want any form of realtime data through Cumulus you need it plugged in to something that is on all the time. The WeatherLinkIP in my mind restricted me a bit more given my current setup, and also costs more as well.

Other thing is if you've got the USB one, your console needs to be close enough to your PC/laptop that you're using if you've got it permanently connected. IP one might give you a bit more flexibility in that regard, but again wasn't applicable for me.
