Cumulus Support

This is not specific to Davis (though that's what I have).
I configured to upload to Weather Underground, KCADAVIS12.
I turned on logging, and looked at the debug file in C:/Cumulus, and find the error which seems to coming from Weather Underground.
But if I cut the line that starts with
http://itupload.wunderground.com ... (a login, pw, and all the data are in this line)
and paste that line (with the ****** replaced by my password) into any browser, the data gets uploaded.
Weather Underground support (William) says if I can upload "manually" that way, the problem is with Cumulus.
I suppose it could also (likely?) be with something in our PC (Windows 7) but I'm clueless.

Any ideas appreciated.

That URL should start 'rtupload' as apparently you are using 'rapid fire', but I assume that's a typo here. Cumulus is updating WU OK for me (but I don't use rapid fire) and no-one else is reporting a problem, so the problem is most likely specific to your PC. Perhaps your firewall or anti-virus software is blocking Cumulus from accessing the internet?

As it happens I have a severe upload problem, which I am trying to debug now. But it does not have the same symptoms as the original poster.

My symptoms:

Uploads to Weather Underground ceased something like 13 hours ago. Two hours later their software advised I was not reporting. I saw this on rising this morning (Mountain Time, US), and shut down and restarted Cumulus. So far as I can tell, Cumulus got one single successful upload to Wunderground at that point, but has had none since.

Meanwhile, the upload to my Comcast webpage of the Cumulus-generated pages appears last to have succeeded 13.5 hours ago. There apparently was not a successful upload at the Cumulus restart mentioned above. It seems likely the Comcast failures and Wunderground failures started at the same upload trial, or very close.

Suspecting a network communications problem I did my usual sanitation measure of shutting down all PCs, my access point and cable modem, and doing a slow intentional order restart. That left the problem unchanged.

All four upload attempts at the set 5-minute intervals after my network reboot report the same error code of 11001 in the Cumulus Error Log. I can't way whether that same code was being logged for the previous eleven hours of failures.

I assume this is all a problem with my PC or with communication upbound from it to the general network, but don't yet have a clue.

Turning on ftp logging and looking at the ftplog.txt will show any ftp errors. Turning on the debug log and looking at the debug.log file will show any errors being returned from the attempted WU update. Doing as the OP did and copying the WU update URL from the debug.log to your browser (and putting your password instead of the asterisks) will give you more information about the problem. As in my earlier reply, perhaps your firewall or anti-virus software is blocking Cumulus from accessing the internet?

Sorry, I didn't spot that you had posted an error code; apparently 11001 is 'host not found', so possibly a DNS problem - but being blocked by a firewall or AV can result in misleading error codes.

I've tried several things attempting to use this advice.

Most recently I had my protection software (Kaspersky) in protection paused mode, and disable Wunderground updating in the Cumulus configuration, so that, I suppose, only my comcast web site would be attempted to be updated. Then I did a manual update request from the Cumulus file menu.

The ftplog for that failure looks like this:

Looking elsewhere, one would think this meant it was trying to reach a currently unavailable internet host. But FireFTP as embedded in my FireFox browser goes to the Comcast posting page successfully, and shows me the files uploaded the last time the Cumulus upload worked.

Realizing that I had not re-enabled debug logging during that trial, I then turned on debug, for another manual update attempt to Website only (no Wunderground).

The apparently relevant debug section runs:

I'm puzzled, though I suspect I've done something dumb wrong.

Sadly I have so far failed to guess my Wunderground password, and my attempt to request it sent to me has not yet been honored. All I get from my attempts to cut and paste the URL line into my browser are the assertion that my ID/password combination is improper.

So I'm failing to find and provide useful information.

One last thing--the error log from my Wunderground attempt did contain a 404 code--so maybe my case is not so very different from the OP after all.

As to wunderground password, it is in plain text in the Cumulus configuration file (under where Cumulus is installed, I don't know offhand the name). You could grab that and see if you can log into Wunderground.

FTP vs HTTP - I assume wunderground uploads are done by some direct mechanism in Cumulus using the HTTP line in the debug log, and FTP is how Cumulus does web site uploads. Is my browser in any way involved in the HTTP access? I've seem posts somewhere suggesting changing some setting, but I will assume it is not involved unless told otherwise.

I'll see about virus checkers, etc. I did disable the Windows firewall to no avail.

No, the http code used by Cumulus is third-party software, it doesn't use any browser code. The code in Cumulus is very simple, it just forms an update URL and then calls the third party component to perform the http 'get'.

I tried patching that password into the line from the debug line, pasted the lot into my browser entry box, and was rewarded by the simple text message "success".

Shortly thereafter I got an email from Wunderground thanking me for getting my station back online.

But it isn't as direct updates by Cumulus continue not to work for me to either Wunderground nor uploading the web pages to my Comcast account.

Color me puzzled.

So you apparently have the same problem as Dick. The most likely cause would be something blocking Cumulus from accessing the internet.

Bingo, regarding my problem.

I run Kaspersky, and pretty much never adjust the settings, so I had to poke around a little:

Application control|Manage application|Search|cumulus

left clicked to highlight cumulus
right clicked and selected "Restrictions" and left-clicked on Trusted.

The very next thing I did was to got to Cumulus and command a manual Update, and it worked.

So--apparently "pausing protection" on Kaspersky does not turn off as much as I might have supposed. Maybe already running applications keep their existing restrictions.

As to how it got that way, I now remember that on looking at my main PC on returning home form a 5-day trip I got an alarming Kaspersky message about an unknown application (unnamed, so far as I spotted). Among the choices offered I selected something like "run with restrictions". To as close as I can tell, this corresponds to the time my problems began.

So I did it, with some unhelpful help from Kaspersky.

Thanks for the hint from the Kaspersky user, I checked our Avast settings, allowed outgoing internet access for Cumulus. If anyone wants to know the details, I can post them. I think I had to reboot Windows to get the change to take effect.
