Rainfall errors

Post by TooL »

Hi Steve,

For the past few weeks I have been getting these erroneous rainfall readings and I am not sure why. It's actually been dry the last 10 days or so but every day I have to go clear out bad rainfall readings. I don't see any notifications on the console or anything else unusual. :o

Hopefully you can figure it out. Diags attached.

Weather station:
Station type: Davis Vantage Vue
Computer: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Windows 7 x64 Service Pack 1 build 7601
Weather engine: Cumulus v1.9.4 (1098)

Thanks!

Your station is reporting rain to Cumulus:

9/2/2014 11:20:02.520 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/2/2014 11:20:02 AM raindaystart = 38.1300010681152 rain counter = 38.1300010681152
9/2/2014 11:29:02.585 : New monthly record, month = 9: 2014-09-02 11:28 47.311 "High rain rate" 2013-09-05 12:51 10.670
9/2/2014 11:30:00.593 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/2/2014 11:30:00 AM raindaystart = 38.1300010681152 rain counter = 38.2099990844727

The rain counter (which is the annual total on Davis stations) went up by 0.08 at that point, and the rain rate figure (which is separate item sent from the station) was reported as 47.3.

The rain counter continued to increase over the next hour:

9/2/2014 12:10:00.045 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/2/2014 12:10:00 PM raindaystart = 38.1300010681152 rain counter = 38.2200012207031
9/2/2014 12:20:00.090 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/2/2014 12:20:00 PM raindaystart = 38.1300010681152 rain counter = 38.2799987792969
9/2/2014 12:30:00.077 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/2/2014 12:30:00 PM raindaystart = 38.1300010681152 rain counter = 38.3199996948242

It also reported rain on the previous day at about 1030 and 1050:

9/1/2014 10:20:00.598 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/1/2014 10:20:00 AM raindaystart = 38.0499992370605 rain counter = 38.0499992370605
9/1/2014 10:30:00.382 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/1/2014 10:30:00 AM raindaystart = 38.0499992370605 rain counter = 38.1199989318848

9/1/2014 10:40:00.837 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/1/2014 10:40:00 AM raindaystart = 38.0499992370605 rain counter = 38.1199989318848
9/1/2014 10:50:00.813 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 9/1/2014 10:50:00 AM raindaystart = 38.0499992370605 rain counter = 38.1300010681152

If you have actually had no rain, perhaps something else is causing the gauge to tip - wind shaking the mounting, or insects in the gauge, etc.

Unrelated to this, I notice that you have the station logger set to 30 minutes, and Cumulus set to 10 minutes, so you are experiencing this issue: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/FAQ#Cumulu ... t_start_up
