Download issue with Instromet Logger

Post by seggins »

I am running Cumulus 1.9.4(1098) on W7SP1 using the Instromet logger . On 28/08 I switch off the PC leaving the logger running. I restarted the PC on 30/08.

The “downloading data” pop up appeared, remained for a few seconds (no progress bar) then disappeared.

On examining the logs I found that the dayfile.txt had been updated but Aug14log.txt had not.

The following appears in Cumulus.003:

Error in earliest timestamp, unable to process logger data

Can you shed some light on this? Is there something I have missed in the configuration?

Apart from this, Cumulus is working fine.https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/posting.php ... ac70d6969c#

If you zip up the diags folder and attach it, I'll take a look.

The station isn't returning anything when Cumulus asks for logger data. You are also getting frequent checksum errors while reading live data, so it looks like you have some kind of communication problem. Do you have the serial port set to 115200 bps, 8-N-1?

Yes, port is set correctly. Shall I set up a different port?

It would be worth trying - and perhaps try a different USB port, assuming it's a USB/serial converter that you're using. Also try a different cable/converter, if you have one.

Started using a different USB port. Now connected to COM5 instead of COM4.
I'll give it a test run this afternoon and then report back.
Thanks for your help and advice.

Something else you could try would be to increase the time Cumulus allows for a response; the default is 200ms. It's possible this is too low with your station for some reason, even though it worked fine with the station I was loaned for the the development. You could increase it to 500ms by stopping Cumulus and editing cumulus.ini. Add a line to the [Station] section:

ImetWaitTime=500

Moving the USB connection did not correct the problem.
I'll try your suggestion for Cumulus.ini

That made no difference.
I've attached the latest diag file as txt

Still no response when Cumulus asks for the logger data. According to the spec, 500 ms is the absolute maximum time that the station should take to respond to any command.

With an unknown buffering time in the USB/Serial adapter.
Do you have another USB adapter you can try, preferably another make (FTDI chipset based ones seem to be generally more reliable than Prolific, but more expensive, and the odd person has found the reverse to be true!).
Does the Instromet logger need any particular pins siganlling - eg DTR/DSR RTS/CTS ?

No, it only uses TX, RX and GND.

Have installed Cumulus and the logger onto an old DELL desktop.
Everything now works fine.
The spec is W 7 (32) [the laptop has W 7(64).
Could that be significant?
Thanks again for your help.

I don't think so; I used 64-bit Windows 7 to develop and test the Instromet code. I think it's more likely the change of system rather than the flavour of Windows.

You didn't previously mention that you were using a laptop; they have a habit of turning things off to save power - perhaps there are some power saving options set on the USB ports?
