The Cumulus Wiki is live!

Post by daj »

We're live!!!!

I've taken the time over the last few days to write all the welcome pages and also some basic instructions on how to use the Wiki as well as how you would contribute to it. There are links to the full documentation, which is exensive and a big read! I've started a few articles too.

Please take some time to read the Wiki and feel free to add to it -- this will only work if we pull together as a community.

Any questions, PM me or contact me via the Wiki (or reply here!)

That's brilliant, thanks very much, David. This will be just the place for all those articles I've been meaning to write about how Cumulus works, but have never had the time. I just need to find the time now :). But I see you've fingered me for a page about Cumulus 2 anyway :)

Perhaps this should have it's own forum heading (above "Sandaysoft Products" ?) Even if locked to admin only, it would be an obvious signpost.

Whereas the mention will quickly get lost in other posts.

I've added a link to the wiki to the main site menu and the forum menu, copied the first post to the announcements section of the forum, mentioned it on the front page of the site, added a news item to the main site, and stickied this thread.

I've added a little extra to the Wiki in the form of a random weather report from a Cumulus site.

If you wish to be included in this send me a private message with the following:

Site name
Location
URL to your realtime.txt

The little applet also include a link back to your site.

Just a note to say that I have been able to tweak the Wiki system to shorten the URL required to refer to an article.

use the form: wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/<title>

so for example,

http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Webtags

Much nicer than http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/index.php?title=Webtags

Old links still work

Enjoy

I have re-written the front page of the Wiki, and categorised all the pages accordingly. I hope you will find the new layout more pleasing and easier to locate the information you require.

I still have some work to do, but it's getting there!

(if the layout looks a little off, refresh your browser page to clear the cache)

I think you need to put a little tutorial up on how to create a page on the wiki with...

Creating a new page
Choosing a good name for the page
Associating it to a category (like WebTools)
Adding links
The autobanner etc...

all in one simple article.

Attempting to figure out how to use the wiki by looking at the help screens is daunting for new users.

I use wiki's a fair amount and it took me almost an hour (with interruptions) to find all what I needed to know from the above list on how to create an article.

Most of it gleamed from an existing article in the same category I was attempting to create the article in.

Kevin

I wrote this some time ago -- does it go some way to helping to write a basic article? I did not want to write too much!

http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Help:Contents/Editing

Since then I have added the categories and the banners but I tend to add those afterward, otherwise people may find it daunting. I may add a note on that -- if you are unsure, just create the article and I will categorise it, etc.

On a side note, the stats are amazing (well I think so) -- in just under six months we have delivered 90,978 pages to 28,179 visitors. (these stats exclude search engine crawlers) :D

Amazing indeed. I do get frustrated from time to time - OK, frequently - when it feels like no-one reads the documention, but those stats prove that I'm wrong. You (and the others who have contributed) have done a brilliant job there.

A quick note to say I have applied an update to the Wiki to help contributors -- I appreciate that writing a page in WikiText language is not always pleasant. A rich text editor is now available when editing/creating a page.

Click on the text above the space you would normal enter WikiText...
ChangeEditor.png
and it changes to....
ShowEditor.png
It's not a complete replacement for WikiText but it you can certainly easily edit or create all but the most complicated WikiText pages.
