Which VP2 interface ?

Post by johnal46 »

I am installing a new Davis weather station. I was going to use the IP cable due to not having a computer run 24/7.
Just noticed that Weather link will not support rapid updates among other things. Which cable ( usb, serial or ip) would
be best for using Cumulus to load data to the internet. Using windows machine that can support these choices. Thanks ....

There was a time when many people (myself included) would have recommended a serial logger over USB, as there were issues with the USB loggers (possibly down to the drivers). I have a serial logger myself. Apparently these issues are now resolved, so there is no longer a particular need to recommend serial over USB.

The IP logger comes with its own issues if you use it to upload to weatherlink.com, due to the fact that it can't talk to software and the internet (weatherlink.com etc) at the same time. Cumulus (and other software) works around this issue, but it's not an ideal situation.

If you do buy a USB logger and want to use it with Cumulus or other third party software, you need to read this: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/FAQ#How_do ... Cumulus.3F

Thanks for the reply Steve, I went with the IP cable.
I can see it does not play well with the Davis software if it's also sharing with Cumulus.
Wonder if anyone is using the Metro Bridge with this combination?

You can't connect two programs to one Davis station (even with an IP logger) unless you use something like Virtual VP (and there are currently issues with that anyway).

Does Cumulus work with the Davis WeatherLink IP logger and interface? We have a Vantage Pro2 Plus station and ultimately, we're looking to make the data available on our website.

Yes, it works with serial, USB (in serial mode), or IP loggers.
