All time records - an idea for extending it

Hi Steve,

I wonder if it might be possible to extend the all-time record feature but for a selected month. So by selecting July for instance, Cumulus would examine all the data for each July and display the results in a similar fashion to the all-time records.

Clearly this only comes into use once a station has been running for over a year but it would be useful to know the hottest July day since records began or the lowest overnight temperature in May.

If you think this has merit could you add it to the Cumulus2 wishlist please?

Yes, Cumulus 2 will (eventually) do that sort of thing. The database uses SQL, so any query like that is easy to add, and even custom queries could be constructed to extract just about anything that you want. "Hottest July day where the wind was from the SW and the pressure was above 1040 mb".

Ah, that sounds very interesting. As someone who has worked with Access databases for many years I'm quite familiar with building queries. Probably a slightly different syntax though but I'm sure I can work it out.

Any idea when C2 will be available?

Not really. It gets closer, then further away, if that makes sense. People keep asking for things in version 1 that I can't help myself but add; there are problems with the Silverlight app that I'm trying to fix; I've recently got a lot busier with my real work, so feel less inclined to sit at the computer for even longer doing Cumulus; then there's real life - I try to fit a bit of that in somewhere, particularly as we're having such a fantastic summer up here.

I don't want the first release of version 2 to be a disappointment; I've spent a lot of time doing the 'infrastructure', but it doesn't actually do very much that's useful yet. I want to add some more usable functionality before I release the preview/demo/alpha/whatever-you-want-to-call-it version.

No worries Steve. I appreciate you have a full-time job plus other demands on your time. And it's not as if I don't already have access to lots of records. I'll wait patiently. ;) When v2 cones along will I be able to import all my data from v1?

You're having a decent summer are you? Or is that tongue-in-cheek? Apart from nice spells in early and late June and early July it's been a very ordinary summer here and I only had about 6 dry days in July!

Yes - in fact that's the bit I've just been writing. Seems to work OK, and is quite fast. My first attempt took several hours to import a year's worth of data. I have it down to 15 seconds now :)

No, really, it's been glorious. See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8177094.stm

Excellent news! For my measly 3 months worth (currently) it would only be the blink of an eye. :)

Lucky sod! Still, you do get it rough in the winter so enjoy it whilst it lasts! As I type this the sunshine has now been replaced by ominous clouds and the rain isn't far away.
