Cumulus Support

I don't like to leave my laptop running 24/7 because of the heat it creates - which I believe shortens the life of the computer. Is there a way I can transmit data to the web directly from my Ambient Weather Fine Offset station without using the computer?

If you are using Cumulus, no there is no way.

You can obviously just close down Cumulus and the laptop and it will automatically catch up from the console when rebooted.

Only by using something else as a 'computer'. If you want something with very low power consumption, perhaps a Meteohub, or a Raspberry Pi running Pywws. Or a low-powered PC running Cumulus

You could try setting the laptop in lo power mode.

Screen off, hard drive off after 5 mins, etc

Its what I do with my 24/7 HP laptop running 13 watts in lo power mode.

It runs quite cool

If you do that Cumulus will be unable to write data to the relevant files. The Help and the advice from Steve is to never let the computer suspend or hibernate in any way otherwise Cumulus will not function correctly.

It's OK to let parts go to sleep, e.g. the screen, but not the whole PC. Powering off the hard drive is also probably not a a good idea; but I suspect for most people Cumulus keeps the hard drive awake anyway, as it's writing so frequently.

As I said, its what I do and its run pretty well non stop for 6 years (June 2008)

Funny enough the hard drive broke last week and I lost a days data.

Managed to replace the drive and its all up and running again.
