Problem with new Windows 8.1 installation

I've got a new computer that I'll be using to run Cumulus, as well as some AIS software. It's a Lenovo Q190 running Windows 8.1. Computer is up and running fine, and I've got Cumulus installed and it's showing the data locally. I've copied all the configuration settings over from the old laptop (Windows 7) where it was all running fine but I can't get any data to upload to the website (or for the AIS data to publish to the web for that matter).
What I think is the problem is that under Windows 7, both programs appeared to use a COM3 port (USB something or other...) but under Windows 8.1 I can only see COM1 (which is not shown as being USB) - sorry can't recall the exact wording as I'm currently at work. I've looked through the Device Manager but the only COM port I can see listed is COM1.
I've changed the settings to COM1 in both programs but that hasn't worked, and if I add in COM3 as the port I get a Windows error saying the port doesn't exist.
Has anyone any suggestions as to what to do next? I'm not really a PC person - more used to Macs!
Thanks
