I have decided to replace my Access database with MySQL, which I believe will not only give me a better database, but will also give me something new to learn. However there appears to be a number of choices regards download. Any suggestions regards what I should download and also any book/books that would be of help, would be much appreciated.

Not sure if you are using the database just for yourself or working on a website(couldn't find a link in profile) so if it's just for yourself, there is a standalone version you could download. But if you are going to use it along with developing your website, I might suggest getting the latest version of the wamp server. It comes with php, apache, mysql in one handy package for development purposes.

Again, not knowing what you are after exactly it makes it tough for a specific answer except to say that in my opinion, it would be a step up from access.
