Cumulus Support

Hi all I am looking for some info as to what software is needed to run a weather station using Cumulus and a WS-1081PC at a location 135km away via the internet. I have a friend who lives in Ballarat and has a farm here in Willaura . He has internet and a PC at both ends and I need to know what is the best way to be able to run Cumulus from the computer in Ballarat to the farm up here. I am not at all familiar with what program would be suitable and secure enough to do this. I have read a number of posts on here and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestion as to what to use to accomplish this task. He was most impressed after seeing my WS-1081PC and immediately wanted one, as he has no idea as to what the weather conditions are on the farm, so here I am asking advice as I have no experience in remote operation of PC's.

Depends on what version of the Windows Operating system he/you are running the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software built into most Windows since XP should do the trick. Trouble is it does not work on the "Home" versions of W7 and Vista, not sure about W8.

Other than that I have used LogMeIn successfully when abroad logging into my computer at home. The Australian version is available here https://secure.logmein.com/AU/ .

I use Teamviewer its free and very easy to setup and use and there is an Android & Apple app.

The best remote software in the world.

The beteljuice also has found teamviewer useful when tweaking the computers of others or transfering files etc.

It can also be used 'face to face' video or messaging.

In your signature I do not see a link to your cumulus webdata, so maybe you are not aware of the possibility to publish live data to the web.

Is remote control really necessary?

Of course without remote access the Cumulus GUI cannot be used, but is it needed for monitoring? GUI functions like select-a-graph can be used when on location.
(Looking at my webpage will give you the wrong idea. I am still a Cumulus fan, but I am using a Raspberry with pywws now)

Teamviewer = highly recommended for remote access and control

As you want to run Cumulus on the remote PC then you need to run the OS on the remote system as if you were sitting at that PC so publishing to a website won't do that.
I see a lot of users (not just those that have posted here) keen to run team viewer/logmein etc etc.

Being very security conscious I am always concerned about these web based 'do everything from anywhere via the web' approaches. If that is what is required then they may be appropriate but my concern is about all the security info that is sitting in that 'middleman' system and despite all assurances I am never comfortable with that exposure.

As your requirement appears similar to mine (1 to 1), I would suggest TightVNC ( http://www.tightvnc.com/ ) as an alternative. This is currently the fastest and cleanest of these VNC alternatives that I have found (and I have used a few over the years as well as team viewer and logmenin) and VNC works across windows versions and is cross platform. It also allows file transfer between remote and host.

It is a direct connection without any 'middleman' system.

I just install the host end on the destination and the client on 'my' end. Both client and host can be installed at both ends but this is unnecessary for most setups.

+1 on everything bjkiwi said, and it's also handy to note that VNC can also be installed on your smartphone as well.

Hi to all who replied and many thanks for the info. I don't have a website and at this stage don't intend to.
I have had my endeavors dampened some what on discovering that my friend runs "Mac's" of which I know nothing and I have not checked yet as to whether there is a version of Cumulus for a Mac system, so all is on hold at the moment!
I am also concerned with security on the link and I will be investigating that further if the project goes ahead as suggested by one
of the people on here. So a lot more research to be done on my part.
I will return when I have done this as it may well be beyond me!

There's currently no Mac version. It's coming, but (very) slowly.

I've been experimenting with remote access to my Cumulus PC. I've been using Splashtop at work for remote access so decided to give it a try. I'm really looking for a way to get the PC deal with issues that might arise when away on holidays or at work.

Splashtop seems to fit the bill as it works on multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. As I run Cumulus on a small Asus EeeBox, often without a monitor connected, this allows me to use either an iPad, PC, etc. over my LAN.

Yet another alternative.

It appears that as of today, the free version of LogMeIn is no longer available. The 'Pro' version is £64 per year, in the UK.
