Got my Davis Vantage Pro2 - Now the install ...

After about 5 years of use out of my FO WH1082 with numerous modifications and repairs, I've lashed out and purchased a new system (VP2). Set it up in a temporary position today just to play with the system and make sure all is working. Should receive the data logger (USB) next week.
The WH1082 has no no working anemometer and the rain gauge has stopped working after it was destroyed in a wind storm some months ago.
I need to think about the location of the anemometer as we have a number of trees in our yard. While I could go further afield and place the tower in a clear paddock (we have 30 acres), I want to subdivide and sell some of the land so need to resist the temptation to make the solution easy.
I'm considering a pivot tower of around 15 meters high, supported with stainless steel guy wires and possibly made of aluminium tube. Has anyone embarked on a similar project?
Those of you with Davis anemometers, how is the cable connected to the head? I was hoping that I could replace it with a longer cable. If not, I shall simply extend it with a connector inside the mast.
I want to get this installation correct first up, so I shall not be cutting corners, especially since I've made a considerable investment in the station setup already. I'm planning on running the console and the EeeBox PC that runs Cumulus from a 12 volt solar battery system I have.
Any suggestions, ideas, criticisms welcome.
