Cumulus hanging & stopping RDP

Hi,

I run Cumulus on an XP machine which is remote, so use RDP to manage it. I have run it for 18 months and had to re-start the machine every now and again, but for the last 2 to 3 weeks it has been crashing every couple of days. The problem always seems to be different (I look in the XP System log and Cumulus logs), but the symptoms are the same.

My PC is also running another software package that uploads to the Internet, this continues to run for around a day after Cumulus stops.

Here is what happens:

Cumulus stops updating my website. If I notice soon after it stops I can RDP in to the machine and usually just go straight for a reboot. If a little time passes, say a couple of hours, I can't get in on RDP and usually nothing else (SSH and remote assistant), so ask someone to go and pull the power plug. When the machine restarts I can see that Terminal Services and/or SVChost has also crashed.

During this time my other app continues to upload, showing that the computer is still running and connected to the Internet.

It crashed this morning about 08:30 and as I happened to be there and couldn't access it, I manually restarted it and then looked in the Cumulus error logs, attached below is what happened. It seems that at 06:20 it couldn't connect on ftp and then it just carried on trying, but constantly failed. I don't know if the Internet was down at that time, it may well have been, but it was working at 08:00 this morning, but Cumulus didn't pick back up.

I probably loose my Internet connection several times a day at this remote site and it is not the fastest connection, is there anything I can do to make Cumulus more fault tolerant of these failures? I am running Version 1.9.3 build 1059 which I think I have been running since it's release. I am not aware of anything new been downloaded on to the machine and it is not set up to automatically install updates. I am running XP SP3.

My internet connection goes down from time to time, as I'm sure it does for most people. For me, Cumulus just keeps retrying at the configured intervals, and when the connection comes back, it carries on uploading again. I also use RDP to connect the headless machine I have Cumulus running on, and have never had any problems with it.

What upload interval are you using? Are you using realtime ftp, and if so at what interval, and does turning that off help? Have you tried setting realtime ftp (if you're using it) to periodically disconnect (using RTdisconnectcount in cumulus.ini)? Have you tried active ftp mode instead of passive (or vice versa)?

You should also install the current version of Cumulus (but that is unlikely to do anything to help with your problem, admittedly).

Thanks for the quick reply. I upload every 10 minutes and I am using realtime FTP to upload the gauges at an interval of 30 seconds. Active FTP is enabled. I haven't set the disconnect.

One thing in the log that does surprise me is that once it goes wrong it keeps on trying every few seconds and keeps failing. The other system on my PC also uses FTP to the same server, do you think that there is a clash, if they both try to use FTP at the same time? Both of these systems have in on this machine since it was installed, but I have changed the frequency of upload on the other system. I don't think the problems with Cumulus started at the same time, but increasing the uploads on the other system would give an increased chance of clashes.

I could turn off the upload on the other system and use Cumulus to upload the jpeg (the only thing I need) from the other system if you think a clash of services might be the problem?

I am guessing that accessing the realtime would result in more clashes, so would fail faster, but I can't really see that in the logs.

So, should I change the FTP mode, or just shut down the FTP on the other system?

It's just moving on to the next file; it doesn't give up if one upload fails.

That would certainly be worth trying.

Passive is the default, so perhaps you changed to Active because it didn't work for you? It depends on how the firewalls at each end are configured. It's worth trying passive mode.

If Cumulus can upload the other file for you, it's worth trying both that and passive mode.

Not sure why I set it to active, but my other system is also set to active. The other system is also uploading every 10 minutes, but it used to take a while to process its jpeg so probably didn't upload until say 20 to 30 seconds after the 10 minute interval. I made a couple of changes some time back and I now think it uploads much quicker, so perhaps a port clash is the problem.

As I understand it there is less likelihood of the same port been used if I use passive?

Only one program can use the same port at one time, so if two program's both try to use the same port (two ftp clients using ports 20, 21) then the one that got in first will succeed and the other will fail. Passive FTP seems to use a range of ports so there is probably less likelihood of a clash.

I will run them in passive mode until failure and then look at the logs. After that, I will stop the other app using FTP and run again until failure. It might take a while though, but I will report the results.

That sounds like passive mode isn't working.

The clients should be using different (local) port numbers. Ports 20 and 21 are used at the server end, by the ftp server application only. Multiple clients can connect to the same port at the server end, using different ports at the client end.

True, so on the client it shouldn't make any difference that more than one client is running. Perhaps the problem is with my server, passive FTP uses a different data port on the server as well.

Hi Steve,

Since changing to passive mode on Cumulus and the other system I am happy to report I haven't had a single crash. I had to restart the PC last weekend, but since then it has chalked up a week of faultless operation, including running a few other programs at various times, so I think we can say it is fixed.

Even the moon phase reappeared after 30 mins.

Sounds more likely to me that you ran into the svchost problem that was reported in Windows XP by Microsoft. As part of the "end of life" process for Windows XP Microsoft downgraded about 600 XP updates to not required and updated some components in XP to cope with this.
This caused a "runaway" problem with svchost (90-100% of the processor) on lots of XP computers (search for "windows xp svchost exe high cpu" in Google and you will see what I mean), but I believe this has now been fixed in the latest monthly update to XP in January.

Using win xp is not really the best idea, for continual FTP uploads. You would be far better using a windows server version, that way you would a lot more control over how the system functions.

XP and RDP have never really got on very well at the best of times.

Hmm, my Cumulus 'server', which also runs the website with PHP and MySQL has been humming away on XP Pro for about 4 years, and I almost exclusively rdp into it both at home and when I'm away via the internet - or CIFS share into the hard drive for editing web files at home. Apart from one incident when Windows update itself messed up and got into a state where it was using 100% CPU and causing the old lappy to overheat, the only reboots required have been for the monthly updates. Pretty reliable I think!
