Newbie
Hi all, I set up my Oregon WMR88 station a few months ago and have just added a UV sensor. Now the next project is to put it on the web. I have been reading many thread and the more I read the more confused I am. I read that I need my own web space paid for or not, what's the best? Then I need software to transfer the info to the web site, the web site has to be able to allow FTP. Then I read somewhere that I do not need web space, if this is so where does the info go. Then what are banners are they the info I see on the web pages and if so how do you make them and show that info? Sorry if this has been discussed before but I am new to all of this.

Re: Newbie
If you want your own web site, like this - http://sanday.org.uk/weather/ - or with any of the other pages that Cumulus users have created, then you need your own web space.
You can also (or instead) upload your data to one or more of the commercial sites like Weather Underground - http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... =IORKNEYS2 - and for that you don't need your own web space.
If by 'banners' you mean the ones that people use in their forum signatures, those are just files on the web, and you would need your own web space if you wanted to create one of those. You need hosting which allows PHP for the banner, most hosting does. It's generally best to avoid free hosting.
There's more information in the wiki, e.g. http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Website_setup

Re: Newbie
Thanks Steve, food for thought. I will check out the sites you have mentioned. If I buy web space what sort of costs should I expect and do you recommend a particular one.

Re: Newbie
I'm not really in a position to recommend any web hosting; the hosting I use would be overkill for a single weather site. There's a page in the wiki, but I don't know how up to date it is.

VIDAHOST are very reliable for as little as £17 a year.billygray wrote:Thanks Steve, food for thought. I will check out the sites you have mentioned. If I buy web space what sort of costs should I expect and do you recommend a particular one.

Re: Newbie
Have you checked if web space is available through your current ISP as a part of your current package? That's all I use and has been perfect for cumulus and my webcam.

Re: Newbie
Thanks for the info All, my present Isp does not provide any web space. I have set up a web site for our local residents through "Web Eden" on our community here in Spain and got in touch with them but they said their sites did not support FTP.
Will keep looking. Happy new Year to all.

Re: Newbie
I was using a free web hosting site http://www.x10hosting.com for testing my edited pages.
it's completely free but you'll have to sign in every month (I think uploading counts) and its 512mb of space.
able to do SQLdatabase and PHP unlike my isp's hosted sites
