Rain Gauge failed -fixed

Post by harrym1byt »

After years of good service, my rain gauge failed a few weeks ago, following a period of intermittent operation. . On examining it one of the reed switch wires had rusted completely through. Rather than replace the entire gauge and having a suitable switch to hand, I repaired it and decided to modify the unit to prevent the problem...

The reed switch sits in a separately enclosed part of the gauge alongside the tipping bucket, such that any water which does get into the reed switch part, has no means of escape - water being kept out by a clip on cover. Mine was still quite wet inside as I opened it. So to ensure drainage I drilled a couple of small holes through the plastic base, into the reed switch enclosure. Two holes, so ensure good air circulation.

Note when replacing reed switches - They can be quite sensitive to orientation. They are at their most sensitive when placed so that the flat strip faces towards the operating magnet. Face it the wrong way and it may not operate.
