I've changed my Browser and Cumulus has been wiped out!

Hi Steve - and anyone else who can help
Having eventually become totally irritated by Internet Explorer 8 (which, despite that comment, I prefer to IE 7), I've just installed Mozilla Firefox as my preferred browser - although I haven't uninstalled IE 8
Needless to say, most of my downloaded programs seem to have disappeared. My Cumulus data is nowhere to be found even to the point where my on-screen display didn't even know me.
Needless to say I appear to have lost all my data from earlier in the year.
I presume that everything is still there in IE 8 but 'invisible' to Firefox.
I'm wondering if the answer is to use the Import Wizard to transfer things but is it as simple as that?
Or is it me that's simple!!!

I don't understand what the stuff is that you've lost - are you talking about on your PC or on the web? I don't see how installing Firefox can affect the programs on your computer, and what you mean by them being visible to IE8 but not to Firefox - you don't use your browser to run programs on your own PC, Cumulus and all of its data should still be there accessible from the Start menu as before.
If it's your internet bookmarks that you're talking about, then Firefox should have given you an option to import them from IE when you installed it. You can make it do that now - in the Bookmarks menu in Firefox, select "Organise Bookmarks...", then "Import and Backup" - "Import HTML", then select "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and click "Next".
If you had any passwords remembered in IE, you'll need to enter them again in Firefox and get Firefox to remember them - is this what you mean by your on-screen display not knowing you - the browser wasn't automatically logging you in?

Hi Steve – thanks for your reply.
The trouble is that I’m not certain about what exactly happened either.
All I can say is that I’ve been running IE 8 for some while (months/years….) and I changed over to Firefox the other day.
As soon as I did so I found that many of my downloaded programs no longer existed. By “no longer existed” I mean that they no longer appeared on my start-up menu and I couldn’t find them in My Documents; Program files or anywhere else. Such things as QuickTime Player; FLV Player; Windows Media Player; Avast! Antivirus (yes – it removed that too!); Paint.net; PCpitstop ….and Cumulus (for some reason) and I’ve had to download them all again. Programs I’d taken from CD-ROMs were still there.
It isn’t the list of favourites and Internet bookmarks – they’re fine once I’d imported them – it was just those programs that I’ve mentioned.
As far as desktop shortcuts were concerned, some still linked and others had to be redirected – as a result of which I made new bookmarks and removed all those that came via IE 8
As far as Cumulus was concerned – when I clicked on my shortcut, the on-screen display came up but with zero data. It had my weather station identity, etc on display but no records – not even in the ‘view’ tab. Each time that I brought up my on-screen display, the Cumulus screen pop-up said ‘downloading data’ – but then it didn’t do anything.
I also obviously checked through all known locations as well to find earlier Cumulus data files but nothing existed….really strange.
So – not knowing what else to do, I downloaded Cumulus again. When I reinstalled it there were no prompts asking if I wanted to over-ride an existing program and when I brought up the on-screen display I had to start again with a whole new configuration – location; elevation, name, etc.
So, although it isn’t vital, I’d love to know what happened to my earlier records.

Do we assume that you did a search of your C Drive for a Cumulus specific file such as Jun09log.txt ? Hopefully you would find more than one copy as you have the new install copy already.

It looks like for some reason you are now running as a different user, or with a different level of privilege; it's hard to see how installing Firefox could do this.
Are you running Vista?

Hi Steve and Super-T,
Sorry to be a while coming back.....had a few other problems too.
I've DEFINITELY had a good search all around my computer (even with the (free!) help of a local expert) and there is nothing in it prior to my changeover to Firefox.
Not only that, I've discovered a scattering of other programs that are missing.....Acrobat; Adobe Reader; ABBEYY Finereader and Nero so far.
Saved in the memory are only files and folders dated after I reinstalled Cumulus....with the exception of these -
Installation 14.06.09
Changes 13.06.09
Licence 02.02.09
The earliest back-up folder is 20090222211037
Steve - no, I'm running XP Home.
As far as bugs are concerned, I've run full scans by Malwarebytes and I have a purchased edition of Avast! running - and nothing has been found.
Very mysterious.......

It's weird. It's one of those problems where I'd have to be sitting at your computer to try to work out what's happened. It's hard to see how installing Firefox could cause this, it's just a program like Cumulus or Notepad. I can't even begin to think of an explanation, sorry

If you go on to
www.logmein.com, he can install this small piece of software which, providing he gives you the login details for logmein, you can remotely control his computer from yours. All safe and secure.
Regards
Jason

Hi Jason and Steve - good thinking; but before I head down that line I've actually got a computer technical friend visiting me on Saturday and he's promised to sort it out face to face with the machine.
I'll await his visit with bated breath and I'll let you know what he thinks has happened.
If all else fails then I'll do as you suggest, fellas.
More to come.....
