Oregon Scientific WMR88 New User, Advice Please

Post by starman316 »

Hello Guys, after owning a Watson w8681 cheapy jobby wx station and finding it a nightmare with its mad daytime OTT temperature readings, and rain collection wobble creating false rain readings so I
I decided to buy an Oregon Scientific WMR88

Unboxed this evening and I am rather impressed by the build quality. Looks much better than the 8681 in terms of build quality anyway,

My question is, where is it best to mount the temp/humidity sensor?

manual says 1.5m above ground, and out of way of rain etc

Now the only place I can think of where it will stay dry is under the eaves of gutter on back of house? would it be ok there? (bricks at the top)

be interesting other wmr88 owners to share what they have done with theirs to keep it away from direct sunlight and rain!!

any other tips you can give me for the wmr88

regards and many thanks

Lee

On the north facing side of the house; keep it away from windows (specially bathrooms etc that have heating). Even though many sensors come with their own pretence of a Stevenson screen, made sure it is shielded from any direct sunlight that may hit it in mid summer (sunrise or sunset for example).

Also keep in mind the brickwork of a house becomes a heat soak - from both the inside and outside so, again, if using the house for a mounting point, you need to factor in how much radiant heat the house will generate.

Thanks for the info, I have mounted it north facing on my shed that faces the house, so it is shielded from the sun. hopefully a sweet spot, shed has no heat source :-)

Rain collector is an issue for me, I have no flat surface in the garden, I have a dog also, so ground mount is not possible, the only thing I can think of is making a shelf on side of shed (shed roof is slanted so cannot mount on that) and placing it on that shelf?? at top side of shed??

sorry for the questions, just want to make sure I am installing correctly
Cheers Lee

Sheds can heat up pretty nicely in the sun, and the thin walls then radiate the heat. If possible I'd insulate an area inside of the wall adjacent to the sensors.

Sounds OK to me, so long as the rim is above the roof line.

Re shed ha ha yes good point!

Also found out wmr88 has no datalogger! hmmmm, needing to run the pc for 24/7 then I suppose to collect overnight data.

Any WMR88 users out there found any workarounds/mods etc?
