Anemometer failed?

Post by ironeagleuk »

Around 3am ish this morning, all wind data failed being received by Cumulus

Have been out this evening to try and solve the problem thinking it may be water ingress in the connector, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Took the pole down, and with the console with me, discovered that I am receiving data from the weather vane, but not the Anemometer.

Does Cumulus not receive wind direction data if the wind speed isn't sending data?

Anyway, I tried a different Anemometer (had a couple of old spares), and it still didn't show any wind speed.

Does anyone have any idea what the matter could be?......could it be the wiring down from the weather vane?

The average bearing will always be zero if the wind speed is zero. The current bearing will be whichever direction the vane is currently pointing, unless you've selected 'use bearing zero when calm' or the station isn't sending a valid bearing.

Aaah yes, I have bearing set to zero if calm....so no wind speed received so it does not display the direction on Cumulus.
Thanks Steve, forgot about that.

Now to work out why am not getting any indication of wind speed on the console

Hi Richard,

The anemometer only contains a magnetic reed switch that pulses twice per revolution (it can sometimes be heard clicking), so a "cable fault" is most likely. Particularly, "open circuit" contacts (displaced or corroded) in one of the connectors, or moisture in the cable/connectors which can "short circuit" the switch because the operating current is very low.

Do you have a multimeter, or some other way to test the switch/cable? Note that the rain sensor and the anemometer use exactly the same contacts, so exchanging the plugs in the transmitter can help to find the fault (but will of course upset the normal weather measurements).

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan

thanks for those tips....I do have a multi-meter, so will be outside first thing if it's not raining, and trying what you suggest.

When I was fiddling trying to get it to work, I did hear the clicking. It just seems strange that none of the anemometers I tried seemed to work.

Will let you know how I get on

It's not easy getting the probes on the connectors I have discovered.

Annoyingly the problem solution wasn't conclusive. I think it was coupler I have for the extension, but not certain....could be the down wire connection from the weather vane, which the anemometer piggy backs off, but the connection from the weather vane always seemed to be ok.

I have put it all back together after giving it all a clean up, and at the moment is working.

The anemometer seems to be ok
