Readings Being Missed In Cumulus v1.9.4 (1084)

Hi Steve,

I've just spotted the problem, again. I think you didn't include the file in the latest Cumulus release. Cumulus is picking up the high wind speed today and putting it into the data. But, it does not show it on the graph or on the dial sometimes, when it happens. I don't know if it's to do with Cumulus or something else. But, it's quite annoying. Especially, yesterday when my wind speed graph showed a spike of 46 mph and not 49 mph.

William

I think that is how it is designed to work. The graph shows the actual readings from the station, but Cumulus doesn't always capture every reading, so it also reads the high values periodically and updates the daily high if they are different.

Yes, Mark is correct. But peak values may not appear on the graph anyway, and this is nothing to do with the fix for the peak gust, see the FAQ. The graphs don't show every value, they are not intended to, and it's not practical for them to do so anyway, there are just too many readings.

As for the gauge, Cumulus picks up the peak gust value once a minute, so it doesn't make sense to put it on the gauge as it may not be the current value. The important thing is that the peak gust isn't missed for the highs and lows.

Ok, I understand. I thought it was something to do with my archive interval set to 5 minutes in WeatherLink or something to do with my data log interval set to 5 minutes in Cumulus. But, thankfully not.

Ok, I understand. If it missed the highs and lows. Then, I would be a bit annoyed.

Just curious. But, would ticking the "Plot latest gust" box in the Configuration, Display menu help at all?

Yes, that setting would help if you wanted Cumulus to plot the latest wind speed reading from the console once a minute, rather than the 10-minute peak gust. It has nothing whatsoever to do with anything else in this thread. The graphs are plotted once a minute. They don't plot every reading. They are not intended to show every value, they show 'trends'.

Ok, that's fine. Though, it seems to have not helped at all instead of: High Wind Gust Today: 37 mph 18:15, the wind graph shows: High Wind Gust Today: 22 mph 18:15. :?

Ok, thanks. I understand.

I have read that exact question in the Sandaysoft Wiki and fully understand, now.

It's a very simple explanation - Your Davis reads data every 2.5 seconds, and Cumulus picks it up. However, the graphs are only plotted every minute. So you'll get whatever value you have at 12:00, 12:01, etc, and not every value your weather station reads.
If that happened, the log would be a huge file.

Ok, I understand. Also, it seems like the wind gauge is only plotted every minute, too.

Also, the data on Weather Underground, Met Office WOW and PWS Weather is only showing the 1 minute wind gust and not the actual wind gust.

Which wind gauge?

What values are those? Cumulus doesn't calculate a 1-minute gust, and Davis stations don't supply a gust speed at all, so what is the "actual gust"?

Cumulus sends the current wind speed (or the average in the case of WU, if you have that option selected) and the peak wind speed in the last ten minutes; it's up to the sites themselves what they do with them.

The wind gauge in the top right hand corner of the front screen in Cumulus.

The values I am talking about are when in Cumulus it sometimes does not show the high wind gust. Instead, it shows the high wind gust as 1 mph less. e.g. High Wind Gust Today: 29 mph 18:57 on the data. But, on the wind gauge, the wind graph, Weather Underground, Met Office WOW and PWS Weather they show: High Wind Gust Today: 28 mph 18:57. This is because they read the wind gust 1 mph for some reason, sometimes.

It is strange because Harpford Weather always plots the wind gusts correctly. Is it something to do with my weather station?

The needle on mine updates every time there's a new reading, i.e. every 2 to 3 seconds. Perhaps your PC can't keep up; try turning off the animation on the display settings screen.

Cumulus sends the current value at the time of the upload - the 'recent max gust', i.e the peak value in the last 10 minutes. If the peak value does not occur at the time of an upload to those sites then they will never know about it. My peak gust today was 65 mph, but it occurred just after a WU update; I update WU every 15 minutes, and the peak gust value was lower 15 minutes later, so WU doesn't have my peak gust value for today. It thinks it was 62 mph, which actually occurred later in the day.

If you're using rapid fire with WU, then you might expect it always catch the peak wind gust, but I have no idea how they handle rapid fire data. They seem to only choose certain updates for storing.

Ok, I have done and I never realised that was there. It actually looks better with it off anyway. I'll see if that helps.

Ok, I understand. So, basically. If the high wind gust was after a upload or before it won't plot it. Does the high wind gust have to happen on the upload or not?

I don't use rapid fire with Weather Underground. I upload to Weather Underground, Met Office WOW and PWS Weather every 5 minutes with the average wind speed.
