Highest Minimum/Lowest Maximum

Post by GlynH »

Haven't been here for a while...Cumulus just works! Thanks Steve :-)

I have a question though - can some kind soul please explain exactly what Highest Minimum/Lowest Maximum means please as it seems like a contradiction in terms to me?

Then after I have got my head around that could they also take the time to explain why my Highest Minimum shows 999.0 °C on 21st April and my Lowest Maximum shows -500.0 °C again on 21st April?

Thanks & kind regards,

I get asked this occasionally, and I seem to struggle to explain it, probably because it's so obvious to me ;)

The Highest Minimum is the highest of all all of your daily minimum temperatures. The Lowest Maximum is the lowest of all of daily maximum temperatures.

The highest minimum typically will occur during the night in summer, and is an indication of a warm night, if you like, where the temp didn't fall much. The lowest max will typically occur during the day in winter, when the temp didn't climb much from it's overnight low, so an indication of a cold day.

You will have had a duff entry saved to dayfile.txt on that day - it may still be there, so the first step is to remove it. Then you need to correct your highest min and lowest max records manually. Easiest way is to load dayfile.txt in a spreadsheet, and sort on the minimum temp column, the max in that column is the one you want, enter the temp and date in the all-time records entry. Similar process for lowest max - sort on maximum, find the min value.

Don't save the dayfile.txt from the spreadsheet!
