Cumulus Support

G'day All,

My station that's been operating for about 2 years is stating to have a few sensor problems (wind and rain gauges keep dropping out) I've looked at the connections etc and I think the salty air here is playing a big part.

So..

I'm looking to upgrade to a new station I've currently got an XC0348 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.as ... rm=KEYWORD

Any suggestions on what would be a good replacement - and wont break the bank ??

Hi Rob,

Firstly, have you tested and/or replaced the batteries in the transmitter? They're the most common cause of the radio signals "dropping out". No need to use the (IMHO rubbish) "rechargeable" alkalines, just try a couple of normal alkaline AAs.

Your link looks like a standard "Fine Offset" station, so you'll find plenty of discussion on this forum with typical model numbers of WH1081, 2081 (probably solar charging) and 3081 (solar charging plus solar data), etc.. That price looks a little high (for that model), but you're unlikley to find anything better (i.e. from other manufacturers) at a similar price. The important thing is to buy from a seller which will give good after-sales service (i.e replacing any faulty parts) because it might be needed. The solar data version might be considered a worthwhile upgrade, but beware that "early" models (at least) have suffered serious reliability issues.

Of course the Davis stations are a good "upgrade", but at a much higher price (and also appear to suffer from "salty air" issues).

I've been up on the roof and changes the batteries, and it doesn't seem to have made any differance. I think the batteries are working becasue I'm still getting Temp/Humid/Pressure readings I'm just not getting anything Wind related (not sure about the rain as it's currently stopped raining)

I originally got this unit as a bit of a "toy/Tester" to see how we went with it (plus it was on sale, $99.99 I think it was)

But having had it for a while and having noticed a couple of the quirks (wind gauge moving around tooo much was the main one), We were already thinking about upgrading, but now that the current system is dying, the time has come to replace

We're happy to spend a bit more (within reason) on something better, and are looking for a start point on what units to look at, the only real pre-requisite that I have for it is a USB port so that I can keep my cumulus page running then - wind(direction/Speed), rain, pressure, Temp(in/out), Humid (in/out) and maybe solar
