Netbooks External Batteries

Hiya , I'm relatively new on this forum. I have had various weather stations over the years but I've always liked to upload my data on to the internet epcs Weather underground and my own website. Due to netbooks this has been made possible due to there very low power they use and quiet operating. Seen as my netbook runs 24/7 is it wise to leave the external battery out and leave it running on A/C Power ?. The reason I'm asking this is because the battery would be very useful in a power outage situation. I feel that if I leave the battery in the device it wouldn't do the battery a whole lot of good other than keeping it charged and maybe causing it to defect e.g possible fire hazard?

Apologies for my poor English.

mildmuck,

If it's any help my Samsung NC10 has been running for over 4 years on mains power without any issues. The battery has been required a couple of times when I've had short power cuts so it's helpful to have one. The condition of the battery seems fine.

I think the chance of fire risk is extremely small.

Thanks for your reply , I know I'm very late in replying to your post sorry , So just to make things clear. You do have the battery in your netbook 24/7 or do you actually take the battery out only to use it in a power outage situation ?

Surely there's a risk of overcharge if battery has been in the system for such long periods of time ?

Many thanks, Tom.

Hi Tom,

The battery has remained in since I got it. I think the chances of an overcharge are very small or zero. There was a scare a few years ago with Dell and Sony I believe but that has since been sorted.

The battery has to remain in for continuous running of Cumulus since I've had a few power cuts recently. No battery would result in everything crashing immediately otherwise.

If you are concerned, check if the battery feels warm/hot (after it has been in for some time - i.e. the next day).
If it is pretty much the same temp as the rest of the machine then it is should not be under any undue stress.

You are more likely to have problems with a battery that won't charge or won't hold a full charge if you leave it on the shelf for extended periods without being charged.
