reading the realtime.txt files with javascript

Hi Folks.
Im new to all of this hand coding and had a couple of questions.
has anyone already got a routine to read the realtime.txt (and other files) in javascript for later use on a page?
is there an agreed location where the realtime files should be placed in the website structure?
