'Real' ones do have a double roof - mine does - but I don't know how important that is. I guess it stops the inside of the roof heating up.

I have read somewhere that it does stop the roof heating up like you say, I will get
another piece of wood and put little legs on it then screw it on top just so it is right
as it can be,
I have just been out with a compass the box is set more west than south not sure if or not to turn it as yet because we should be moving in the very near future so I can set
it right then.
your input is very much appreciated thanks steve

Try 'Instruments' tab on http://measuringtheweather.com/links/
Don't know how useful it is now, but many many decades ago (before PCs were available) I had a manual set of a few instruments and I kept an informal record book and if I remember correctly some instruments were from one of the companies now listed as supplying traditional instruments on this web page, other instruments were homemade because I had little pocket money!

Thanks Kevin I will have a look, I have been looking everywhere but everyone seems
to have gone digital, that's ok, but I think if you go to the trouble of buying a screen at
what I think are extremely high prices or do a self build like I have done it would be
great to have the more traditional instruments inside it.

Stevenson screen self build

I have noticed that many of these screens have an outer roof which is sloping towards the south. It may also function to remove rain collecting on the top. I have 2cm of chipboard on my roof with a PVC coating and an enamel outer coating, and there doesn't seem to be any heat getting through that, but I had always intended to add a thinner, outer roof later. It can't hurt.

Hi all just an update on Stevenson screen as Steve mentioned early on the Screen was the wrong way round (or would be better turned around) well that has now been sorted as I found that what Steve had said was spot on when the door was opened the sun was right in there also it was mentioned that another roof would help stop the the SS becoming to hot and that was also correct about mid day on really hot days there was a spike in temp, so added a second roof about an inch bigger all around than the existing roof, held up there by 4 threaded bars and a series of nuts and washers, it is about 3 inches up of main roof and it does make a real difference I can see it also helping come the winter as it will stop snow sitting on the roof.

Quick pic's
