Intervals for Updating APRS & WU Have Become Irregular

Post by russ75 »

I've been updating APRS/CWOP and WeatherUnderground for approximately two years now. I've had the time intervals set at 5 minutes. This past week, the update intervals have become highly irregular, sometimes taking up to an hour between updates. My weather station is an Ambient WS-2080. I'm running Cumulus 1.9.2 on a Windows 7 Acer One Aspire netbook.

I've cleared the WS-2080 memory, restarted the computer, unplugged and reconnected the USB connectors. I've disabled the feed to APRS/CWOP and let the WeatherUnderground feed run, and vice versa. I've also set the WeatherUnderground update interval to 1 minute, but it usually updates every 1 to 4 minutes. Any help getting back to regular update intervals would be appreciated.

APRS/CWOP have changed the upload format on some of the servers. Servers are used in rotation, so when the upload hits one of the servers which doesn't accept the old format, the upload fails. You will need to install the beta version 1.9.4 of Cumulus - see the Announcements and News section for download details. Note that 1.9.2 is very old now anyway, and no longer supported. Just to complicate matters, apparently CWOP/APRS are apparently having some server issues at the moment anyway.

Your WU site appears to have been updating every 5 minutes today. Were you using 'rapid fire' previously, perhaps? That's the usual cause of apparently irregular upload intervals, but it's just the way WU handles the tabular data.

There was also an issue over the last day or two with the aprs servers. I had problems getting my data to propogate (I wasn't the only one; it seemed to be a widespread outage) but it appears to have corrected itself this morning.

This has happened in the past also.

Steve,

Thanks. You are right. The WU updates for today are pretty much on schedule now. They're coming every five minutes with a few ten minute intervals here and there. Seems to be working fine right now. In answer to your question, I don't use "rapid fire," although I did yesterday for a very brief period while troubleshooting the irregular update interval problem.

APRS/CWOP is another story. The updates there are still quite erratic. I wasn't aware of their server problems and the format changes. I'll upgrade to Cumulus 1.9.4 per your suggestion.

Big Okie,

Good to meet you. I'm just down the road from you in Edmond. Have you been enjoying the cool weather this past week? I can't remember such a comfortable 4th of July week ever in Oklahoma.
