Hi Ken/others,
Is the check-fetch-times.php optional or do I have to have the file? Because, I've renamed some files included in the file so it's made some of the entries weird.
Thanks,
William

Re: check-fetch-times.php
It's not 'required', but is unusually helpful to diagnose problems with your template website setup. Without it, it is more difficult for me to diagnose underlying configuration issues. Also, the built-in version checker (with ?show=versions ) can easily help you keep your support scripts up-to-date.

Ok, right but if I correctly install these files I won't need it? Ok, oh right. Yes, yes (yes) yes but why do I need to keep them up-to-date?saratogaWX wrote:It's not 'required', but is unusually helpful to diagnose problems with your template website setup. Re: check-fetch-times.php
The underlying support scripts work fine now, but many of them are dependent on particular structures for the HTML from which their source data is pulled (like WU-forecast.php, get-usno-sunmoon.php, get-meteoalarm-warning.php etc). When the source websites change, the support scripts also need to change. Likewise, adding support for things like the Steel-Series gauges necessitates changes in the underlying support scripts.
In other words, the software is only working temporarily -- as external conditions change, some of the scripts may also change in order to work again. The version checker just helps keep your template site at current (functioning) maintenance levels.

Right ok, ok can I just use your website to check for updates then? Yes, ok. Ok, ok.saratogaWX wrote:The underlying support scripts work fine now, but many of them are dependent on particular structures for the HTML from which their source data is pulled (like WU-forecast.php, get-usno-sunmoon.php, get-meteoalarm-warning.php etc). Re: check-fetch-times.php
Sure. It is your right to maintain your website (or not) as you wish. Choosing a more difficult manual path over a mostly-automated one is also your choice to make .. It is not as efficient, but you may have other goals in mind.
In any case, be aware that support for issues is only available for unmodified code (that is: unmodified outside the settings configuration area in the code having a issue). You mod it, you support it.
