Sudden spikes in Temps around 0400 local time

I know this has come up before but I can't find the prior post...sorry.

Using Cumulus 1.9.4-b1080 but don't recall seeing this particular anomaly in prior versions. VP2 using firmware 3.12.

Occasionally, usually at around 0400 local time, I get this:

Sometimes the "spike" is larger. Suspect I have something set wrong in cumulus.ini --sampling time too short perhaps?

Any insight appreciated.

Isn't 4am when Cumulus sends the time sync to the Davis console? Not saying that's causing it, but I'm on b1079 right now and don't see this.

It is the time it sets the clock, yes, so it could be related. But it's been doing that since build 1069.

Do you have the option to set the clock selected?
Do you run Cumulus 24/7, or close it down overnight?

Please zip up the diags folder and attach it.

Yes, I run Cumulus 24/7 and do have the set time option checked. I have occasionally seen that "spike" at other times of the day also, however.

I think the temperature reading must be a genuine reading coming from the station, there's nothing to indicate otherwise. Particularly as it's not a one-off spike, it's a sudden change which then continues in a reasonable fashion. I don't think it can be related to the setting of the clock.

That ftp error is coming from the ftp server; if you don't know which file it's referring to, turn on the ftp log and that will show you.

It could be an actual temp change, I suppose. Just seems more that coincidental that I've seen it at least five times right around the 4:00 AM time frame. Strange thing is, when I've looked at the dayfile I don't see the spike there; i.e. the large temp jump.

I have a number of crontabs that run as often as once a minute on the web server and the php one from TNET weather that creates realtime.log from the realtime.txt file. Perhaps one of those is putting a file lock on one of the files if they both happen to fire at the very same instant?? Not sure.

It looks too sudden to be a real temperature change, unless the sun happened to hit it at that time; but I don't suppose the sun is up for you at that time?

I'm not sure where you would expect to see it in dayfile.txt? Do you mean the monthly log? And do you mean that the temperatures in there don't correspond to the graph? Could you zip up and attach the June log file, please?

It's very odd that it happens at exactly 0400. I suppose one thing to try would be to turn off the setting of the clock by Cumulus. But it's hard to see how that could be the cause, when the temperature stays high afterwards, but starts moving in the opposite direction. It's almost as if the sensor gets affected by a sudden heat source, and then slowly goes back to normal. I'd suggest a faulty sensor, but the fact that it happens at exactly 0400 so often is puzzling.

Yes, it's very strange. The aggravating part is that it doesn't always happen. As you can see in the file, many times the entries around 04:00 are completely normal.

I'll disable the clock sync option for a few days and report back.

Well, after disabling the clock sync yesterday no temperature spikes thus far. May just be a coincidence.
If there are no spikes for 3-4 consecutive days I guess we can then begin to suspect the sync may have something to do with the spiking.

Update on this...

After four days of having the Cumulus "synchronize clock" option disabled there have been no spikes at all.

Today, I have re-enabled the sync.

We'll see what happens.

I've been watching your graph each day (when I remembered) and haven't seen an issue until today. But it's just after 0300:

So that eliminates the setting of the clock. I suspect you have a problem with the sensor (although I note that there is also a 'step' in some of your other readings, e.g. humidity and wind direction). Can you just confirm that Cumulus was running at the time, i.e. the data was 'live' rather than from the logger?
