hi steve
Diags.zip
just as an update I have reinstalled cumulus onto an other partition and below is the diags folder as it is doing the same sort of thing which is making me think it could be the base station that is not sending data rather than cumulus not reading it.
Diags.zip
any help would be great
thanks
bruce

Yes, that's almost always the cause of it getting stuck downloading data at start up. You have some kind of USB problem:
29/05/2013 07:45:19.802 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!
29/05/2013 07:45:29.820 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!
29/05/2013 07:45:39.822 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!
29/05/2013 07:45:49.833 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!
29/05/2013 07:45:59.834 : Error!!! Failed to write to USB!
29/05/2013 07:46:00.357 : *** Data input appears to have stopped
I can't say whether this is a problem with the USB on the PC or the station itself.

just a quick update
have tried all 5 usb ports on the laptop and the same thing happens. they work with other items like flash drives and wireless mouse which is making me think that the problem is going to be the base station.
is my logic logical or have I missed something really obvious and had a blond moment

That sounds right to me. If I'd had to guess I would have gone for the station; I think the 'unable to write to USB' error probably means that Windows can't communicate with the station, rather than being unable to use the USB port.

looking in device manager when it happens still shows everything connected which also pointed me to the base station failing.
I will look into finding a replacement only one more question promise
could this mess up the data that I have for the last 3 years?

It won't mess up your old data, but you'll have a gap in the data, and may have a bit of tidying up to do because of that.

Sometimes it's a bad USB cable; you could try swapping that since it's easy to do. Be sure to use a quality cable - interference can mess up USB transmission easily with these beasties. Often it's bad solder joints in the station - if you are so inclined, you could open it up and re-solder the connections.

thanks Charlie
already changed the cable as for a dry joint its has been up and running without any problems for 3 years so cant really see it been that but have nothing to loose opening it up and having a look.
as for missing data that I can live with same as tidying it up have had plenty practice at that as I have 2 transmitters one in the greenhouse and one outside sometimes they have started talking to the wrong base station and mess things up so I have done weekly backups for both for some time so there is not as much to sort out.

Those USB sockets are pretty crappy soldering and over time, with plugging and unplugging, it could break.

thanks for your info
still not 100 % it is the base station need to do more testing but managed to order a replacement just in case.

ok been swapping between laptops and base stations and it looks like the base station. took it to bits and checked for dry joints but could not see anything resoldered the usb connections but don't have the equipment to do surface mount components only thru board
guess what
still the same device manager dose not see it now but when you connect it up the relay dose operate so the power is getting there but must be no data
on the bright side I will have a spare display and case
not sure for what but we do collect things at our age just incase
