April 2013

Post by ARootBear »

Today's the first of may, meaning April has come and gone. How was April 2013 where you live? Was it warmer or colder than normal? Windy/rainy? Any new monthly/all-time records broken? Post it here!

Average temperature last month for Bishop's Cove, Newfoundland, Canada was 3.0°C, around normal for this time of year.
Had my warmest temperature so far at 15.8°C on the 26th, but I've only had my station since the winter so this is being broken pretty regularly.
All time highest pressure: 1043.89 hPa on the 23rd.
Highest 10-min average wind speed: 74 km/h on the 6th, with a gust to 101 (highest gust was 108 back in January).
Only recorded 40.8 mm or rain this month, normal for April is close to double that.

Almoster, Catalonia (Spain):

Temperatures (17.4 mean of maxima, 9.4 mean of minima and 13.4 overall mean) have been pretty close to historical averages, although some dispersion has been observed along the month:
  • - First third was relatively cool and dry for this area, with a minimum temperature of 4.3 ºC registered on the 6th.
  • - Second third was quite warmer and even drier, with a maximum temperature of 22.2 ºC registered on the 17th. No rain was collected between the 7th and the 24th.
  • - The last third was quite rainy and cooler, with a total of 94.6 mm collected between the 25th and the 30th, out of a total precipitation of 97.4 mm in the whole month. During this period, the temperature has not exceeded 20 ºC, with a relative maximum of 18.6 ºC on the 23rd.
Regarding precipitation, this April has been clearly above average in spite of the previously mentioned dispersion. Historical average is 41.6 mm and therefore it has been largely exceeded (+55.8 mm). Measurable precipitation (>=0.2 mm) has been registered in 11 days, out of which 6 days (the last 6) registered 2mm or more and one day (the 29th, with 39.4 mm) more than 20 mm.

As far as wind, this has not been a particularly windy month for what we're used to in this area, although the average speed (9.6 km/h) has been slightly higher than the historical average for april (9.1 km/h). Highest gust was 67.6 km/h on the 1st and the average of the highest daily gusts was 39.9 km/h.

Four records for the month of april (since 2008) have been registered: lowest temperature (4.3 ºC on the 6th), lowest daily maximum temperature (10.9 ºC on the 5th), lowest daily average temperature (8.0 ºC on the 5th) and highest daily precipitation (39.4 mm on the 29th).

Here in Cheadle Hulme April 2013 was 0.2C below the monthly average.

The highest temp was 18.2C on the 15th. The lowest was -2.9C on the 6th breaking the April minimum temperature.

Rainfall was 0.7" - only 36% of the average for April. Every month this year apart from January has had below average rainfall and the annual deficit now stands at 3.98".

Highest wind gust was 47mph on the 17th breaking the April record.

High pressure of 1034.75hPa on the 20th was the highest April pressure I've recorded.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Here in Bremerhaven, April was like this:

Average temperature: 7.4°C - longterm average (1961-1990) for April is 7.5°C, so it was very close to the average.
Highest temperature: 21.6°C on the 25th, this is also usually the highest we can expect on an average April, it can sometimes already hit the 25°C mark, but this is rather unusual.
Lowest temperature: -3.4°C on the 1st- this was a new record low for April and probably close the lowest temperature we can get in April.
Rainfall: 24.3 mm- this is about half the rain we should get in this month (longterm average is 47.8 mm).
Best Regards

Georg

Temperatures a bit above average, and the second dry month in a row here at Loomberah, NSW Australia, and May is supposed to be the same, if the long range forecast is to be believed.

After all the big rain from Ex Cylcone Oswald in January and the rain in February and March the total for the year is 971.4mm which is 404.4 mm above the average for January to April being 510mm. The total so far this year is only 113.3 mm below the average yearly rainfall of 1084.8 mm. According to the latest long range forecast for the probability of above average rainfall there is for a 75 per cent chance for the next few months. The highest daily total was on 13th with 40.1mm with the last 12 days of the month fine and sunny.

It was not too windy with the highest wind gust of 31.6 km/hr on the 5th and a monthly total wind run of 885.5 km. Air pressure (in hPa) was normal for this time of year between 1007.7 on the 20th and 1025.2 on 5th. The average minimum pressure was 1015 (0.7 above average) and the average maximum was 1019 (0.3 below average). Average minimum humidity was 60 per cent (0.5 below average) and average maximum humidity of 90.5 was one per cent below average with humidity ranging from 34 on the 20th (a new record for April) to 98 on the 13th.

In terms of records broken in April there were not that many with the following made:
- Lowest minimum humidity of 33 per cent at 1:50pm on 20 April 2013
- Highest daily wind run of 126.4 km on 5 April 2013
- Highest Heat Index of 31.1 at 1:55 pm on 23 April 2013

April 2010 was a warm one in southern Ontario wasn't it? I was in Ottawa at the end of April/beginning of May for a sports tournament, it was so warm compared to Newfoundland at the time. I believe when I got on the plane in St. John's it was 3 degrees and fog, and when we got to Ottawa it was around 20 and sunny. Stayed that way for the entire week I was there, I think it reached 27 one day. When we got back home it was still 3 degrees, windy, and there was some snow still lying around. Pretty strong contrast compared to the fully bloomed trees and flowers in Ontario
