UK 2012 Rainfall totals

Post by RayProudfoot »

Given 2012 was the second wettest year in over 100 years in the UK I'm curious where my station stands in a league table of the UK's wettest Cumulus stations. Despite 203 days of recorded rain I'm sure I'm closer to the drier end than the wettest.

So let's see who wins. Probably somewhere in the Lake District or perhaps south-west England. Then again, Wales has had it bad too.

Post your annual total and top three wettest months. Here are mine:-

2012 Annual Rainfall = 40.26" (1022.6mm).

3rd wettest month - April - 4.84" (122.9mm)
2nd wettest month - June - 5.1" (129.5mm)
Wettest month - December - 5.34" (135.6mm).
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Ray, don't worry! My Davis Vantage Vue is a right pain in high winds! In fact, a local weather station, Harpford Weather received 1385.8 mm of rain in 2012. Harpford Weather is only 2 miles E of Newton Poppleford Weather.

Just to make you feel better, I'll post my even punier totals. It hasn't been significantly wetter here than usual; we don't get a lot of rain in total anyway, but we do get a little rain on a lot of days. And I've just broken my longest wet spell today - 41 days.

2012 total - 898.0 mm

3rd wettest - January 115.4 mm
2nd wettest - December 139.0 mm
wettest - September 142.2 mm

Total rain days 265.

(Half of August is missing from the above figures due to station hardware failure)

Rainfall varies quite a bit even over short distances. Wait until Mark in Wilmslow posts his numbers. He's 4 miles south of me.

Well, I do have a manual gauge on the ground about 1 meter away from my Davis Vantage Vue which is about 5 meters high and when it's windy my Davis Vantage Vue can underread up to 20% at times!

All air-mounted rain gauges probably underread but compromises have to be made with design and temperature is probably a bit more important than rainfall.
