CMX4.3 with Ecowitt GW2000 Gateway and LDS01 Laser Depth Sensor

From Cumulus MX version 3 build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since, and has recently released Cumulus MX version 4. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Unpacked and connected the LDS01 Laser Depth Sensor, and compiled short status report of Ecowitt/CMX/CU experience:
  • Hardware: still winter, but no snow here, so made indoor test. Also have not yet found final pratical solution how to mount in my garden.
  • Ecowitt: GW2000 with latest firmware recognizes the LDS01 and webserver of gateway allows calibration to set Total Height to switch from air-mode to depth-mode. Ecowitt.net dashboard displays the sensor. All working as explained in manual (and in WIKI i found in German forum https://www.wetterstationsforum.info/wi ... 54_-_lds01
  • CMX: Sensor is detected as WH54 via Ecowitt TCP/IP API and battery information read out. I think/understand that is current status of implementation; so no display (yet) in Extra-Sensors.
  • Had CMX Settings - Display Options - Snow - SnowDepth and Snow24h already to visible, but that has been working independant from LDS01 with diary and to show daily snow charts.
  • in CMX - Edit - Weather Diary I set to Automated Readings, but the Automated entry was with a NULL entry at end of day (although I had a "snow" depth of 25mm in my Ecowitt LDS01 for inhouse testing)
screenshot.CMX.weather.diary.automated.reading.jpg
  • CU: after the paramters in cumulusutils.ini [ExtraSensors] LaserDist=1 and LaserDepth=1 were set, I got additinal Extra Sensor Charts for ExtraLaserDist and ExtraLaserDepth and could adapt translation in CUstringsEN.ini. But no data yet as depending on CMX.

Hi, and thanks for your update. Looks like mine could be delivered on Tuesday. We are expecting some snow over the next days.
All working as explained in manual
Is the manual included with the LDS01?

Enjoy,

The LDS01 arrived this afternoon, and I have it connected and reading. It is a temporary install on a plank above 10 cm existing snowpack. The display shows 0810 and the WSView Plus App was showing 'Air' 809 mm and 'Depth' --.-. That is about the same as I measure with my ruler from top of snowpack to the sensor - 8 cm. I'll need to read up on what settings I have to do to set the surface depth. I have also seen a change in 'Air' to 808 so will keep an eye to see what may cause that.

No snow in the forecast until Thursday so I have time for a more permanent install.

IN CMX I have set the Weather Diary Editor:

Code: Select all

Automated readings
Laser Depth #1
Adds an automated reading to the database from the above sensor at the snow reading time. This only creates the record if a manual record has not already been created.
Success: Set automated to 1
I had made the usual 8:00 am entry this morning and presume nothing will be added until 8:00 am tomorrow or if the 'Air' height is decreased by snowfall.

Enjoy,
Paul

809 mm is 80,9 cm.

If you configure the Total height you will have Depth.

Hi, and thanks.
I have set calibration at Total Height: 900 and that then shows 'Depth' 91 mm, or the 9 cm snowpack I reported this morning.
The 'Air' measurement still drifts between 808 and 809 and 'Depth' between 91 and 92). Not that it will make any difference in snow measurement as 1 mm is way below measuring a snowflake, just wondering why it changes.

Enjoy,
Paul

Are you sure the mounting is 100% stable? Could it be some wind movements?

And it is within the specification:

Mine is scheduled for deliverance on Thursday.

Hi, and thanks again. No not 100% as only used 1 screw in the temporary mounting.

This morning just after the 8:00 am I checked the CMX Diary and it shows 'Automated entry' and Null for both Snowfall and Snow depth. There was no new snow in the past 24 hours.

The DB Browser has an added entry:
2025-02-04 08:00:00.0209729 Automated entry Null Null

The Ecowitt Live data shows:

Code: Select all

CH1 Lds
Depth	92 mm Air	808 mm
I am surprised it didn't record the existing 9 cm (92 mm) snow depth.
Will have to see whether I want to measure new 'Snowfall' or 'Snow depth' and how. I presume this is what Mark has been looking at.

Enjoy,
Paul

As the three CUtils users are currently experimenting with the laser sensors, I would like to point to a post in the CUtils forum. CustomLogs can easily be used for the lasers sensors (and possibly other sensors) without obliging CMX to log them really as extra sensors.

It seems to me CMX could decide to focus more on CustomLogs.

Just to repeat my reply in the CUtils forum;
I don't know why I never thought of it before, but have just now added the snow webtags as a new SnowLog in Custom Daily Log settings. Can I go back and add past logging? ;)

Enjoy,

On another LDS01 thread at WXForum.net I had asked how to get the new LDS01 show on Ecowitt site, but that may be lost in a personality clash so asking here to the many Ecowitt users.
@,
I have had GW1000 and soil and air quality sensors since 2018 but these were eventually abandoned by me but still show up on https://www.ecowitt.net/home/manage when I log in. This now also lists the new GW2000B but says it is Offline. I haven't been able to find how to get this online and show the LDS01. After 7 years I've forgotten how to add a new station or device. Any suggestions?
The Ecowitt site https://www.ecowitt.net/home/index?id=235001 shows:

Code: Select all

Code: [Select]
GW1000B-915
GW1000-433
GW1000-WIFI1117 433Mhz
GW2000B-LDS01
Offline

No Data
I have reactivated one GW1000 with the PM2.5 and that is displaying on my Local Network > Live Data, but is also not uploading to Ecowitt. My locations shows on the Map.

Enjoy,
Paul
