Unprecedented rainfall New Year’s Eve 2024

A quite extraordinary spell of rain for my station in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire that started yesterday afternoon at 16:14 and ended at 07:49 this morning.

A total of 3.61” (91.7mm) fell in those 15 hours 35 minutes.

The highest rainfall for a single day remains 2.06” on 12 August 2010 but yesterday came extremely close with 2.01”.

But with a further 1.60” falling after midnight the total of 3.61” in just 15.6 hours is unprecedented in 15.5 years of recording. Imagine if that had fallen on one day. My daily rainfall record would have been obliterated.

A record for me to, though my 24-hour rainfall figure is currently only 75.4 mm.

We went for a walk down to The Carrs this morning (a local park) - it is impassable as the river Bollin has flooded. Styal Road is closed at Twinnies Bridge due to flooding, with the obligatory abandoned car in the middle of it. Are people really that stupid, the water must be at least 1.5 m deep!

Hi Mark. You can add the A34 near John Lewis, Alderley Edge bypass and of course the A555 to the Airport. The M56 near the airport was closed earlier.

I’m not at all surprised cars being stuck in flooded roads. Even SUVs might struggle. Some people really are thick.

Second wettest year in 15 years of recording. I wonder what 2025 will bring. Some heat would be welcome.
