CUtils 6.9.6 - chart background

Post by AndyKF650 »

Hi Hans

Well after a lot of trial and error and some new pics in clear blue skies I have found the size for the background image. I used a .png file that was 1051 * 700 to fill the area. I am pleased with the result, let me know what you think.

It may be helpful to put the size into the wiki.

Hi Andy,

About the size: that will be related to the device you run it on I assume. If I shrink (make the browser window smaller) I see only part of the image, if I would have a high resolution monitor the image would probably repeat. You have used an image where that effect is highly visible because it depicts something. Would you have taken a more or less meaningless photo of the sky nobody would have noticed.

The view area itself has a height which can be set by the user but the width is screen dependent.

What is used is the default setting of the image in the view area for the css background property, the default being left upper corner and repeat until filled. We can choose to use other defaults. I would then favour fixed and position center but it is very personal and dependent on the size of the image. Kind of Pandora's box.

This is btw the same way as the header image works where we could start using other defaults as well. It seems possible to give some defaults in the definition of the background, so maybe I could think of a second parameter defining the

So, let's start a poll: everybody using images as background, how to position (centre, repeating, fixed size???).
Please study the background property as linked above.

I am not very in favour of images as background to graphs though I understand its use and sometimes even like it. If I would use an image It most likely would be blurred, unrecognizable and just something to break the monotony of the single HTML colours. A bit like the effect of gradient colours but then even more unpredictable. So, liking is highly personal and the personal touch to the site. It is very nice to see a beautiful photo of Jersey, but as a chart background I would probably have blurred and soften it, most likely even a lot lighter (overexposed).
I am not very good at visual / colours and I understand viewing is highly individual as well (remember the discussion about the dress :?: )
So with permission, I would like to practice vote abstention

I agree the defaults need some work, I'll wait with adjusting the wiki until resolved.

Please note that Patrick has also used an image as background to the charts which has less expression (less distraction to the viewer) with softer tones and kind of natural blur.
